State of Recruitment Report #2: June 25, 2017
Hello everyone. I wanted to take a moment to give everyone a brief update as to what has been going on recently in the Recruitment Office. We have a lot of changes so try to follow along!
The Recruitment Office: Back Online!
So I finally moved into the new office. And did quite a bit of spring summer cleaning. Holy shit there was a lot to clean up; everything was all dusty and there were cobwebs and there was this skeleton in the closet. Also, all the pin boards were all tilted at exactly 16 degrees off center...
Well, I fixed all of that. The office and the furniture are all clean and shiny, I replaced anything that needs to be replaced, and put the pin boards back where they needed to be. Also I hired the skeleton as the new Assistant for Recruitment. His name's Mr. Dooter.
Mr. Dooter, Posing Like One of Your French Girls
New Telegrams Have Been Approved!
So the telegrams have been updated from the 2016 model into the futuristic and stylish version of 2017. So, like a year's difference. Which is like a six year's difference in Siora! So there! Checkmate skeptics!
Anyways, the office has developed a new Welcome Telegram that gives basic instructions on how to begin participation in the region and a New Nations Recruitment Telegram that focuses on nations coming from the Feeders (any Pacific regions in NS). Our next goal is to begin developing a Revived Nations Recruitment Telegram that focuses on nations in the Sinkers (the places where dead nations revive).
This is very important to note so please read this. PLEASE DO NOT RECRUIT ON BEHALF OF ETERNITY WITHOUT AUTHORIZING IT THROUGH LINES AND LETTING ME KNOW FIRST. The enthusiasm is absolutely appreciated, but it is important to keep in the know on this because we can get in serious trouble if things are done wrong. We usually have an autotelegrammer that sends out messages via the NS API. Additionally, you have to be authorized by the NS Region's administration in order to be approved as a recruiter. Unauthorized recruitment, especially using the NationStates API can put us in very serious trouble with NationStates on a technical level; that's the worst kind of trouble you can get into with them because we can lose access to the API.
Autotelegrammer... Needs a Bit of Tuning
Speaking of the autotelegramming machine, we got it up and running! And it's awesome! Over the past few days, we have sent out almost 470 telegrams to various nations in the Pacifics, with a few queued for sending.
You may have also smelled some smoke coming from that machine, or saw me in a panic recently. Yeah... turns out the machine needs some fine-tuning (which is also why Mr. Dooter has been removed from mechanic work). Something must have disrupted the connection with the API of NationStates and as a result, we ran into a ratelimit (which means we can't send more telegrams at the moment). We are waiting for all queued telegrams to be put through before the machine starts up again. This will hopefully be completed by tonight. If not, the machine will be back up and running tomorrow.
That's all I have to report for now! Take care!

Мсциславск (Mstsislavsk)
1584
It was a night as every other in the center of the Nentsian capital, Mstsislavsk - a name that foreign tourists will never learn to pronounce. In the past there were even politicians who proposed to change the name, but in the current political climate, such changes - for symbolic reasons - were unthinkable. For Mstsislavsk was named after the legendary medieval grand prince Mstsislav, who resisted foreign invaders with his army and managed to keep the city and its Kremlin out of the hands of a larger overlord for a while, before the inevitable happened anyway. St. Mstsislav is now a symbol of strength, of national sovereignty, of resilience and of national pride. Such powerful symbols have been kidnapped in the past years by the president, Aliaksei Vynnychuk, who has been using national symbols to promote loyalty towards his own person.
Looking out over the city from a luxurious hotel was the president's daughter, Ksenia. A middle-aged woman now, her father increasingly began to rely on her for everything and anything. It could be political, diplomatic, or something as simple as watching a movie with him. Having been the president of this country since 1559, the president was getting old. He had come to power as a reformer, a man who would change the establishment. But now it wasn't so certain anymore what his legacy would be. From the 1570's onwards, Vynnychuk's reign had faced growing accusations of corruption, abuse of power, election rigging, and the use of brutal violence against opponents and demonstrations. Since the 1580's the regime went into siege mode: the opposition had fled the country, and was colluding with the Mordvanians to overthrow the regime, while the regime used all possible means to suppress open expressions of dissent and to crush all threats. This was now the fork in the road: using ever more force to control the country, or to reach out to the enemy and propose reforms?
With the physical ageing and weakening of Vynnychuk, the face of the system appeared weaker and weaker. Ksenia Vynnychuk, who had been a Senator (never present) and a Deputy Prime Minister, aside from owning several major companies which were given favourable treatments by herself as the government, expected that she would take over from her father in the near future. The man did not trust any of his political cronies, and certainly not any of the military figures or officers from the security services. He had no sons or brothers. Ksenia was the only person he really trusted. He never outright told her however that he wanted her to take over. Only once he said that if he did, she'd be assassinated by someone. There will always be someone who wants to block the transition. It was for her own safety. But if Vynnychuk dropped dead tomorrow, her authority to succeed him could be weak.
Therefore Ksenia had made an arrangement with her father tonight. She would have a meeting with her father, and demand some guarantees. At about 1 o'clock in the night, a motorcade showed up before the entrance of the hotel. Bodyguards secured the area and shielded a person who quickly vanished into the hotel. Five minutes later, Ksenia received a phonecall from the hotel manager that the president was on his way.
Ksenia and some of her secretaries prepared themselves, and then there was a knock on the door. A bunch of muscular bodyguards came in, searched the room in a few seconds, and then let in the president - followed by his security minister, and his staff from the Office of the President. Ksenia greeted her father and they sat down - almost as if it was some kind of a diplomatic meeting. People tended to keep their distance from the president, and the president kept them at distance. He demanded respect, and people were afraid to insult the man.
Initially, Ksenia first had to convince her father that this was a private conversation and that she wanted to speak to him alone. After some hesitation, the president told everyone else to leave the room with the gesture of his shaking hand. ''How is your cancer treatment going?'' Ksenia then asked when everyone was gone. The president shrugged. ''I will die fighting'', he remarked somewhat cynically. Ksenia and the president drank tea. ''Are the doctors doing all they can? Have you consulted specialists in Nyland, Angiris and Lanlania?'' Ksenia inquired.
The president barely responded. Nothing frightened him more than medical talk. He distrusted his own body. Hospitals reminded him of how vulnerable anyone really is, and that we all carry our own deaths inside of us, long before we actually die. ''I have read about another experimental treatment..'' Ksenia tried again, but the president interrupted her with a gesture of his shaking hand.
''What do you really wish to discuss?'' he then asked with a low voice. Ksenia had prepared her formulation. ''Mr. President, I think you will not be around us for long anymore, and I think you know it. In the interests of the State and the Nentsian people, I think it is of utmost importance that you take the necessary preparations in case we lose you as our President. Appoint me as your Vice-President, and I am in the position to quickly dash the hopes of any eager usurper. The country is in good hands with me. I have your genes. Only you and I can bring stability and order in this country. Without us, it is lost.''
President Vynnychuk stared at his daughter the same way when a minister reports bad news to him: unmoved, bored even. Seemingly calm. After a moment of silence, he came with his response. ''The moment I announce that, you will be living in a cage. Mordvanians, Kubanizan mafia, Saratovian nationalists, traitor within our own ranks, the armed opposition - all of them want your head on a silver plate. You will live from fortress to fortress, travel in the dark of the night, and learn to fear everyone as a potential assassin. You will learn to distrust even those closest to you, and you will grow addicted, like an alcoholic, to your position. I want to spare you from all that, but I still wish for you to expierence it one day.''
Ksenia didn't move a single muscle in her face as she listened. ''I know what I am doing. Spare me the trouble when you are gone, and elevate me to the position of Vice-President. I have been in more troubling positions in my life.''
President Vynnychuk rose from his seat. Ksenia followed his example. He put on his long coat, and the bodyguards and staff re-entered the room. A call was made to the hotel staff to clear the hallways. The president did not feel like seeing anyone else this evening. When the halls of the hotel were cleared, the president headed back to his car, and disappeared in the night.
Ksenia walked over to her cell-phone and dialed a number of a man named Ihar Kumieha, who worked as a high-ranking officer for the UGB, Directorate of State Security. ''Do it. I will have your back.''
At the other end of the city that night, a group of Nentsian gangsters and UGB agents placed explosives under the car of vice-president Zmitser Gavrilenko - then having a dinner in one of the most exclusive restaurants of the country. When he left, around 2.30 in the morning, he and his wife, and four bodyguards were blown up.

Hey so I'm thinking we really should standardise equipment if we are to work together militarily. So I'm proposing this, we standardise the following main items
Arm:
Guns
Tanks
Infantry vehicles
Artillery
Airforce:
Fighter jets(maybe interceptor and multi-role)
Transport aircraft
Tankers
Radar Aircraft
Navy:
Basically similar standardise each class of ship
In terms of who provides it we should consider carefully. I think the 5 main options are severyenne(Cheap and effective), Taenus(Probably better, also neutral) , Llanlania ,Nyland or Oslanburg

"Ayzek only spies on you most of the time."
Eternity returns to NationStates
Since the dawn of Eternity's "great influx" of 2014, the community as a NationStates region has settled into a quiet slumber when both activity and efforts concentrated solely upon forum membership. With the exception of a brief spurt of NationStates-related recruitment in late 2016, the community's footprint on the Max Berry-inspired website slowly dwindled, even as forum activity thrived.
That all changed recently, as Dear Leader Ayzek gave his blessing to the grass-roots upswelling of support for a return to past glory. Even all-powerful King-Deities deserve rest, and with the Dear Leader showing signs of fatigue from managing the weight of literally all known existence, Seperallis - Chief of Logical Reason, Keeper of the One Beard, and all-around superior specimen of peak male performance - took the brave and magnanimous initiative to relieve His Supreme Benevolence of a small token of His overwhelming burden. With blessings of The Linear One in hand, it is with immense joy that we return to you, to NationStates, to the world, eager to learn more of our fellows in other communities as we likewise share of ourselves with others!
New recruitment officer takes the helm
As part of a completely unrelated yet highly convenient wave of new patriotism sweeping the community, Ayzek (King Alldays, long may he reign) proudly announced a new community recruiting initiative, led by the intrepid volunteer Alvino Castillon. Showered lavishly with gifts by His Benevolence, the highly reputable and dilligent hive of bees immediately set to work in its new post as it worked with the community to identify needs and re-create the program from scratch. Already within the first few days, the erstwhile cobweb-infested recruitment offices received a makeover, with sections devoted to tips, suggestions, templates, even an impressive desk and bulletin board where to display all the office's tools and projects for easy access.
Good job! Way to go! What a Model Citizen!
Discord in Eternity
With several terrible puns pending discovery, the community recently saw creation of a new chat service. The community has for years used a chatbox on the forum, but its limited functionality and lack of voice support began to frustrate efforts to organize community events and frustrate users as they held multiple conversations together. Thankfully, Rommy and several other saw the need and established a Discord service to meet the expanding needs of the the community. Huzzah!
We don't expect to kick the good ol' chatbox to the curb any time soon, though the new Discord is already enjoying regular use by most members. If you're feeling social, you should definitely visit us sometime.
Other News- Addition of forum descriptions under consideration.
- Region/Forum sloganeering underway as citizens rediscover the essence of the community.
- Ritual sacrifices to The Benevolent One on the rise with unborking of community wiki.
- The Linear One releases new "recent events" timeline tool.
Balochian Crisis explodes in north Marzanna
Years of the brutal cycle of Balochi oppression and Saamojed terrorism exploded into a tense armed standoff between Saamojedi separatists in the north and Balochi government forces in the south of Balochia. After the forced round-up and "deportation" of tens of thousands of ethnic Saamojed to the pooer occupied north-country, and with winter coming, desperate Saamojedi "freedom fighters" staged a brutal and protracted uprising. The slow swell of opposition eventually overwhelmed the outnumbered Balochi army, ending decades of occupation of the ethnic Saamojed lands in the north as they freed themselves in a campaign of ethnocentric revenge that's left countless dead in its wake. An unsteady calm hangs across the battle lines, as both sides hold their breath, waiting for the curtain to rise on the next act.
Quote:They could see the smoke from a few kilometers away. Large black columns of smoke drifting lazily into the night. Above the sky, the northern lights could be seen, making for a macabre sight as the plumes appeared before them. It was not a good sign. When they saw it, they rode even faster. It could really only mean one thing. As they grew closer their hearts sank. Great fires in the village. Nearly every home was burning. Wood was the primary building material so there was plenty of fuel.
The caribou they had only so recently killed were among the blaze as well. The waste was monumental. Brekke was unsure if he was crying from the smoke or from the tragedy. The three hunters moved through the village, searching for anything resembling a living person. Oh, there were bodies, both burned and unburned. The snow was stained red. Women, children, and men lay prostrate and cold, their lifeblood spilled.
Brekke did not want to find his home but found himself unwillingly drawn to it. It must have been one of the early ones, as the flames were nearly finished. He peered inside to see two forms that were at one point his mother and sister. This time he knew why he felt tears.

Mazaghean Woes
The history of Mazaghea, a former USR bloc republic set free long ago after the collapse of the mega-country's communist regime, continues to unfold, the story told in Siora's "Historical" section. Jamzor the Jaxxor weaves a tale of intrigue, conflict and betrayal set in the world's bloody past: freshly free from communist oppression, power vacuums and conflicting agendas create factions within the newly minted, post-USR democracy that threaten to destroy it from within. Surrounded by larger local powers, can the small, mountainous nation keep itself from destruction from both without and within?
Quote:A man walked down a crowded street in Nalkop, the capital city of the Mazaghean Socialist Republic. Like everyone else, he wore a thick overcoat and stuffed his gloved hands into its pockets, trying to hold on to whatever warmth remained in his body. Snow fell and wind blew harshly. There were no warm greetings of friends, neighbors, or coworkers in the street, as everyone kept their eyes downcast to the path directly in front of them, taking the quickest route possible to their destination. This was no time for anything warm and friendly, and it was more than the weather which brought about such a state. War was brewing. The man could smell it on the air, and he knew what it smelled like. He was a natural soldier, a Mazaghe warrior born to the wrong time, he liked to think. He liked to think that he would have been more suited for those old days when the Mazaghes answered to no one but themselves. With dagger in one hand and flintlock in the other, he would have defended his homeland before it ever even knew the feeling of oppression.

Q2 Author's Challenge closing soon
The second quarter of the Eternity Author's Writing Challenge is coming to a close at the end of June, and everyone totally didn't forget the deadline was fast approaching, they're just, uh...making final perfect preparations so their stories will be the best! This quarters' randomly-picked writing themes are "seed," "iron," "prayer," and the topic of "keeping a secret," all of which are in no way highly suggestive in nature at all.
Q3 themes have already been picked, and will be made public on 1st July. In the meantime, while everyone perfects the writings they've actually had ready to post for months now, why not join us and peruse the Q1 writing entries from earlier in the year, available for all to see here.
Explaining the Dutch
Nentsia, resident Dutchman, essayist and catnip addict, has continued his series on the Dutch national psyche via an exploration of the Dutch history the local Ministry of Education doesn't want you to know. Often full of opinions, Nentsia's well-researched and often very long writings, regardless of the topic, are a great way to burn some spare time while gaining perspective on a topic of history that very few often consider. If you're up for an almost-academic read on a little-known topic, you can't go wrong with this thematic collection.

Steam Summer Sale Conundrum |

So as some people have noticed, Steam Summer Sale's here, that point in the year where you buy all the games you plan on playing for the next several months because you know sales come regularly and you can't afford them otherwise. Or, is that just me?
Sal and I want to play games with people. We've had several things on our wishlist for a while that we'd love to play, but they require other people, and playing with people you don't know is dumb because you can't shit talk without someone getting ALL OFFENDED or whatever. Also, we have Discord now, so that's a thing. Anyway, I've been thinking of gifting some shit (like we gifted shit before), but I'm not going to buy this stuff for people if they're not going to play them. There are three games under consideration that we might get and play as a group, so tell me what you'll actually play.
note: Sal may potentially get, like, some copies of the runnerup as gift rewards for the Authors' Challenge later in the year. Maybe Q4, around Christmas.
#1) Armello ($12 on sale)
This is a cute and gorgeous computerized board game. The objective is simple: become the next King (or Queen) of Armello. Pick your character, some items, and go on your quest. Be careful, though, as the game only has a finite number of turns before it ends. It looked like hella fun when I watched it played, and it's gorgeous - did I mention it's gorgeous already?
The Cons: It's expensive at $12 (on sale), and triple that for the DLC. I can't afford to gift the base game to more than a couple people.
#2) Tabletop Simulator ($10 on sale; $7.50 ea. if bought via 4-pack)
You know it. You love it. This is the massive online board game simulator, and an example of what would happen if you took Desperate Gods to its logical conclusion (except it might actually work). The game comes with all the classics already, but also includes an entire workshop of thousands of free player-created board games and puzzles to play, as well as about 28 premium DLC games built and licensed by the creators of their physical counterparts. The game sets up the board for you, but that's it: no rules are enforced by the computer, and all moves are performed in a shared physical space, just like if you were playing a board game in real life.
The Cons: You can flip the table. Please don't.
#3 Golf With Your Friends ($4.19 on sale)
You golf. You minigolf. You minigolf with your friends. It's a fun little way to pass the time and get frustrated at your own ineptitude. Also, it's cheap, so I can actually afford to get this for several people.
The Cons: Literally none. I am not biased.

Welcome to the External Liaison Desk. I'll make this pretty sometime. For now, I'm running out of time to get things done tonight, and need to get something bare-bones up.
Currently, we need help. We need External Liaisons to be active with the following communities:
- The North Pacific
- The East Pacific
- The West Pacific
- The South Pacific
...and any others that you wish to volunteer
Currently, we have the following External Liaisons, reporting to the following outside communities:
Show Content Tivona Shneider:
If you wish to help with disseminating our newsletter, then please post in this thread with the following information:
Code: I wish to enlist as an External Liaison to the following communities:
(insert here any forums or NationStates regions, either from the above list or otherwise, along with links to both their website/forum and NS region page [if applicable])
If you want to stop being an External Liaison for any community, then post here with the following:
Code: I wish to terminate my role as an External Liaison to the following communities:
(insert here any forums or NationStates regions, either from the above list or otherwise, along with links to both their website/forum and NS region page [if applicable])
But what do I do as an External Liaison?
Good question. Your duty as an External Liaison is to be our public face to other internet communities.
Your duties include such things as:
1) Posting the most recent external newsletter to other communities for which you are responsible.
2) Posting in the most recent newsletter thread every time you post it in another community.
3) Not doing or saying things that piss off people over there.
4) Interacting with the community over there.
That's basically it.
How can I become or stop being an External Liaison?
To become an External Liaison, find the relevant code above, fill in the relevant info, and post it in this thread. Likewise, to give up your duties (without being a total asshat and just stopping without telling anyone), find the relevant code above, fill in the relevant info, and post it in this thread.
I'm an External Liaison from another community, what do I do?
What are you doing, and how did you get here? Go to this thread, copy the code, fill in the relevant information, and post it in that thread. Seriously, how'd you get here...
I'm an External Liaison for Eternity, where do I find our newsletter to post???
The most current newsletter will always be stickied within this subforum. The newsletter will always have a post from me asking for people to post in that thread when and where, if they post the newsletter elsewhere; post there with the relevant info, and I'll update the thread with that info.
Furthermore, I will send a PM to all External Liaisons ever time a new newsletter is posted like that, so everyone has a fair chance of being informed.
Finally, I will always post the current Work In Progress newsletter in this thread, to discuss before it gets finalized and published. DO NOT TAKE THE NEWSLETTER TO POST FROM THAT THREAD as it is for discussion and information purposes only; only ever take the newsletter code from the stickied newsletter thread, which will be titled something similar to "Eternity Newsletter {vol.#} [month] [year]".

If you come from an external forum, community, website, or NationStates region...well, first of all, welcome!
Affiliation between Eternity and your community confers a wonderful way to advertise the happenings in your community with us, and open a wonderful exchange of minds, ideas, and maybe even community events! If you wish to form an affiliate link between our community and yours, then below is the form to do so; a member of our admin team will review your application and fulfill your request as soon as possible.
Please just copy the code, fill out the relevant sections with relevant information, and post it in this thread. Thank you!
Code: Link to your Community Forums:
What is your role or admin function in your community (if applicable)?
Do you wish for Eternity to send an External Liaison Officer to your community? Yes / No
Do you wish for a dedicated subforum for your community on these forums? Yes / No (Note: This request may not be fulfilled. See below.)
NationStates Information:
Name of nation within the Eternity region:
Region or Organization Represented:
Do you wish to establish a NationStates Embassy?:
Link to NationStates Region:
Are you a terrorist?
If you are not from NationStates, just ignore any references to it.
What do I do now that I'm a "Foreign Liaison?"
Once you have been masked as a Foreign Liaison, you are free to immediately begin your activities on the forum. As soon as you would like, you may begin advertising, showcasing, writing about and whatever else you would like to share about your home community within our Foreign Liaison Center. This is your corner of our community, within which you are free to showcase what you wish, within the limits of our Community Etiquette. We will also try to accommodate any requests you made in the application, such as sending our own External Liaison to you.
Please note that an Eternity community membership will supersede a "foreign liaison" masking, and allows for broader access to our community!
Why was I not given a sub-forum, even though I requested one?
I apologize for the disappointment! Our community forum is home-built and does not run on a major free forum hosting network; as such, it is much more difficult and time consuming to create and dismantle forums, or to constantly change forum permissions for members, as compared to forums built with (for example) Zetaboards or Invisionfree. As such, the community administration has decided that such sub-forum requests will not be immediately satisfied, to ease the burden on the trained monkeys in the backroom; we will make note of the request and fulfill it at a later time, once we are satisfied with your activity and consistency.
In the meantime, please feel free to create and reply to threads within the Foreign Liaison Center!
