  Game days
Posted by: Seperallis - 03-15-2017, 04:58 PM - Forum: The Gameroom - Replies (11)

I've been wondering about the viability of setting up game days. You know, just a day where we take an hour or few to do something together, similar to our CAH happy hours every now and again. Obviously not everyone has a set schedule every day like some of us boring old working folks, but we don't always have to plan dates in advance.

I feel that, with the previous discussion about Discord, this would probably be the perfect use for it.

What would we play? Well, anything we have time for, really. I've been entertaining the idea of "Desperate Gods," but I think this would be perfect for any other free multiplayer games that we can pop into quickly, or things we all (or most of us, anyway) already own. Yeah.

Anywho, that's just my thoughts. Just something beyond only doing CAH, which, let's be honest, can start getting old if done too much.

DECISION 1582

ELECTION NIGHT

The Battle for the Senate

It is that time once again. It is Election Night in Angiris, with the Imperial Senate on the line in an election where the balance of power could once again shift. Two years ago, Chancellor Aerandariel Apotecarius held on to power after two rounds of voting and carried with him 29 Republicans into the Senate and an eventual coalition with the Democratic Party. Now two years later the script has been flipped. The Republican Party is weakened, the Conservative Party has found itself in deep trouble after a decade of defeat, and numerous minor parties that have risen to fill the opposition vacuum have been overwhelmed by both the still nearly unmatchable strength of the top two parties but also the emergence of the Democratic and Orthodox Conservative parties as the two new political powerhouses. for the entire campaign this year, the Republicans, Conservatives, Democrats and Orthodox have run nearly neck-and-neck. The Republicans started out in front, expecting to hold court like they have for years until the insurgent Democrats came roaring into play, eventually overtaking the Republicans. Meanwhile the Orthodox Conservatives, starting out fifth in the polls at the outset, surged to a strong third place to overtake the mainstream Conservative Party. The twists and turns this campaign have taken have produced some of the most incredible political shifts that the Angirisian Empire has yet seen.

So what could happen tonight? Some say the Republican Party, despite all the polls, could still come out on top and the status quo remains in place. Others say the Democratic Party will attain the mantle of power for the first time ever and change the landscape of the nation. There are others who say there may be no clear winner tonight. But one thing is certain: nobody will attain the magic number of 36 seats needed to clinch a majority in the Senate and possess unmatched power in the legislative body.

The 1580 results fell like this:

The Republicans, with 29 seats, held on to their status as strongest party in the Senate, with not even a combined opposition coalition of 14 Conservatives and 14 Orthodox Conservatives able to overtake them. Add on the 12 Democrats elected in 1580 and you have a coalition bench of 41 with the 5 Federalists and lone Communist as the outliers.

Throughout the night, we'll be filling up a map of the Angirisian Empire as each of the 79 seats declares for one party or another. It is expected to be a night filled with more twists and turns that nobody could or would see coming and hopefully we see a clear winner before night's end. Welcome to Election Night in Angiris!

1582 Nyland Federal Elections
For Half the Legislature
15 Vintyr 1582

Quote:This is a thread for the 1582 elections in Nyland. Half the legislature's seats are up for grabs. Actual in-context, rp voting takes place in Vintyr. I will give notification to when this closes later; I haven't decided on a fair timeframe.

Voting is OPEN

Welcome to the 1582 Elections! We have a very important election this time around, but when are they not? Last election saw a shift in the power dynamics on the right, as the UP, for the first time, became he single largest party in the Federal Assembly. However, an up-tick in Liberalist activity has both the NL and NCL hot on their heels and still very powerful. Will we see a continued slide to the right on Nyland politics? How will several new parties influence the coming political landscape? I guess we'll find out in 1583!

Voting will take place between now and run until whenever. Most likely the start of 1583. I guess we'll see.

Everyone will have TWO votes to split between all parties; this has now been set in stone as permanent, but may still change should we have an abnormally large number of candidate parties. A list of all registered parties, and links to their information can be found below, and may also be found within the vote itself. If you don't see any parties that fit your ideals, you like, or want to create your own just for the heck of it, then you can come to this thread and set one up! if you're curious about the makeup of the past term's legislature, you can see that at the veeeeeery bottom of this post.

Elections in Nyland: a call for input
Posted by: Seperallis - 03-13-2017, 01:05 AM - Forum: Discussion and Planning - Replies (5)

Hey guys, I've been mulling things over, and looking at results for past "experiments," I think I finally have enough info to come to a conclusion on exactly how to do the elections: whether to offer three votes, or two.

The general question is this: Do you want three votes, or two?

Some may have noticed that I've sometimes changed how many votes are allowed in the election poll every now and again. I've been doing this to figure out exactly what effect this has upon election results, and I've come up with some info that I'm fairly certain is accurate. So, let's get into it.

with two votes
Two votes makes what I feel is field of politics that's much more representative of must RL multi-party democracies: over time, with two votes in the election poll, a handful of "major" parties emerges (like we have now with the UP, NCL, and NL), a couple middling-tier political movers, and several small parties. I personally like this best, as it generates clear and dominant ideological leaders such as happens in the real world, and just feels more realistic overall in tending towards either isolated ideologies (i.e. the UP's dominance for lack of other right-leaning groups) or moderate ideologies.

With three votes
Three votes makes the legislature resemble much more like some Dutch abomination, where large parties tend to be weaker; while the same parties as above are still at the top of the list, their seats are much diminished, and distributed (generally) along ideologically similar parties; "bloc" voting becomes more prevalent and has a much greater impact as most generally vote either right or left, rarely voting a split tab, and this tends to cause a diminished importance on any single party.

However, it does have the added benefit of making the legislature less volatile; with more votes to spread around, chances increase of any one party getting part of the vote. Swings in you lots' mood has less of an effect, which is pretty good for someone like me who pisses everyone off without a care. Flipped Smile

With four votes
Yeah, this isn't happening. Votes get far to spread out. Did this once, and it basically makes elections moot, so the choice is between three or two.

SO yeah, go ahead and cast your vote, and comment here if you have something to say. Thanks.

  International Trade
Posted by: Ayzek - 03-12-2017, 05:08 PM - Forum: Factbooks - Replies (36)

This thread can be used to organize and coordinate your state's international trade. You should use the forum available at the end of this post. Some pointers on trade: your nation's top trade partners are most likely your neighbors and the largest global economies (Nyland, HLE). This is, of course, unless you don't get along with them for whatever reasons. If you don't get along with your neighbors, your top partners are mostly likely countries which you do.

Your top export partners are not necessarily your top import partners, though they can be.

If you're not sure what to do with your trade, you may ask on the chat or in the Discussion and Planning forum, or examine a RL country whose economy you consider similar to your own—just google "Economy of Country" and check out the infobox there.

You may look to the CIA's World factbook (under Geography) for advise on your natural resources, but keep in mind that natural resources are tied to the environment and geography, not to a country's economy. (Though, you do need an economy to better tap your natural resources.)

  A Snapshot of War
Posted by: Jamzor the Jaxxor - 03-12-2017, 12:06 AM - Forum: Historical - No Replies

Pforoshmel, Union of Socialist Republics
1524

Sunset marked the end of one grueling, terrible day and the beginning of another sleepless, horrible night. Ilia Kovalenko sat shivering in his makeshift shelter in the shelled-out ruins of the Severyanian city of Pforoshmel. He was inside a ruined house with no roof. The ground was exposed by a large hole in the floorboards, but it was frozen solid and impossible to dig in, so Ilia had to make due with only above-ground cover from the icy wind. On one side there was a hole-filled brick wall. One the other side was an overturned wheelbarrow. The wheelbarrow had a hole in the bottom and was missing its wheel, otherwise it would have been taken for carrying supplies. To fill in the gaps, Ilia and his battle companion, his good friend Grisha, had used loose bricks and other debris. As Ilia settled down for a couple of hours on watch, he could hear the far-off chatter of machine guns, the booms of exploding artillery shells, and the individual pops of snipers firing. He dare not lift his head up too far into the hole in the wall through which he was able to watch the street in his immediate vicinity, but he knew that a few hundred yards to the northeast, down the street of what was once a bustling town, was the enemy–the hated Communists. They would be dug in much the same as he was, clutching their rifles much the same as he was, dreading the coming battles much the same as he was, fighting off the deadly cold much the same as he was, but all the same ready to kill the enemy without hesitation or remorse much the same as he was.

He also knew that there would be at least one sniper watching this street, likely at some elevated point, if there were any available which could make a half-decent blind. The snipers were the true killers in this battle; the snipers and the artillery. At night, one might make the mistake of thinking it was safe to move, that you would remain unseen. This rarely worked. Sure, instead of being able to see the whites of your eyes, the sniper might only see a dark silhouette, but they knew where their men were supposed to be and that anyone seen anywhere else must be assumed to be hostile. Sometimes, it was a scavenging civilian. It might not seem like it, but there was still a civilian population in Pforoshmel. They lived in cellars, basements, and other hiding places among the ruins. Whenever Ilia saw one, he or she looked filthy, emaciated, and often ill. There was no running water, no hospitals, no food, and no way out. Neither army would let civilians through their lines for fear of spies and saboteurs. Neither army would even let a civilian come too close for fear of suicide bombers.

They were stuck between a rock and a hard place, much like Ilia and Grisha. He didn’t want to be here, but he had no choice. If he attempted to return home now, he’d either be shot by the enemy while he attempted to withdraw, shot by his own army for desertion, or feel the guilt of having left his brothers to toil and fight alone for the rest of his life. He couldn’t bear to leave his brothers-in-arms. They were his family. Grisha was one of his best friends. They shared secrets together, like Grisha’s love back home, whom he planned to marry immediately upon his return from war.

Ilia tightened his grip on his rifle. Somewhere down the line, a shot rang out. It was close, probably a sniper. Then there sounded another shot. Then another. Then a burst of machine gun fire. Then a whole chorus of weapons fire. Then silence. Some unit down the line might have repelled an attack. Was that all for tonight?

Ilia’s question was answered by the sound of incoming mortar shells. “Incoming!” someone yelled. Seconds later, hell erupted on earth. There were explosions all around. The only thing Ilia could do, the only thing any man could do, was press against the frozen ground, pray, and curse the Severyanians.  Shelling was by far the most horrible of wartime experiences Ilia had experienced so far. The feeling of utter helplessness, of your life being held in the hands of chance. It ended after nearly twenty minutes. After waiting for a few minutes to make sure it was over, Ilia chanced a look out into the street. He saw nothing, but he heard the awful, distinctive sound of a helicopter closing in. He couldn’t see it, but he presumed it to be a Union helo. The Union forces had held air superiority for the better part of a week as the rebels desperately tried to get spare parts in order to repair their grounded aircraft. Ilia heard rockets firing and flying overhead, exploding about fifty yards to his left. Then there was a continuous firing of machine guns as the helicopter did a strafing run. Ilia chanced another look, just in time to see a shoulder-fired rocket race towards the helicopter, outlined by the moonlight. The helo jinked sideways, and the rocket flew harmlessly past. The crew apparently decided that was too close, however, and they flew away.

A couple more minutes passed, and then there was a shot from a sniper–one of Ilia’s comrades. Peeking once again, Ilia saw that this was definitely a new assault. Several silhouetted figures moved from cover to cover, gradually advancing up the street towards his position. A burst of rifle fire from somewhere up ahead brought one of the figures down, but a chorus of return fire from the fallen’s comrades apparently removed the shooter from the fight, for he never fired again.

No orders from superiors were necessary; Ilia knew what to do. He and Grisha took up different positions while attempting to remain in sight of each other, in case either was wounded. Ilia loaded a grenade into the launcher mounted on his rifle. The figures were careful not to bunch up, but when two of them decided to hide behind the same debris pile, Ilia fired the grenade. It landed slightly behind the pile and exploded, sending fragments in all directions. He didn’t see if he got his targets, for almost as soon as he fired, the enemy sent rounds where they had seen his muzzle flash, and he had to back off of the window he had been firing from. Bullets slammed into the back wall, sending dust into the air.

In this case, the night was on Ilia’s side. The enemy night-blinded themselves with their own muzzle flashes. It was now a full-blown gun battle. There were shots back and forth. Machine guns occasionally fired tracers. The enemy’s mortar support for their push now returned, and the shelling returned. There was return fire from the rebels’ own mortars. It was hell.

Eventually, as Ilia was about to pop up from a new position and fire through a small hole in the wall, the building next to him took a direct hit from a mortar. The blast blew bricks and debris everywhere. Ilia was thrown to the ground by the concussive blast. Dirt and dust was thrown over him. He coughed, his ears still ringing. “Grisha?” he called out, coughing. He heard no reply. Grisha was nowhere to be seen. Stumbling into the next room, Ilia saw Grisha sitting up against the wall with an almost foot-long shard of wood sticking out of his throat. “Grisha!” he gasped as he ran forward and crouched next to his friend. When Grisha tried to speak, blood gushed from his mouth. “Medyk!” Ilia cried into the night, but he knew that it was pointless. Grisha would never survive a wound like that, and within a few minutes he was dead. Another casualty of war.

  1582 Magentina National Elections
Posted by: Hadash - 03-10-2017, 08:25 PM - Forum: Elections - No Replies

Magentina 1578 National Assembly Elections

The Republic of Magentina's 333-member National Assembly (Lower House) elects both the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic (the latter along the Senate), supervises the work of the government and passes all laws. It was a mixed electoral system, 150 MPs are elected through a winner-takes-all system, while the other 183 MPs are elected through a national proportional representation system of political parties.

You will elect those 183 MPs elected through a national list for the 1578-1582 term. You have 2 votes.

Liberal Action for the Republic (Liberal Party-Action for the Republic)

From 1565 to 1578, the centrist Liberal Party (Partido Liberal) was under an electoral coalition with the social-liberal Reform Party, known as National Democratic Union (Unión Nacional Democrática). Guido Belmonte, the Liberal Party's leader, was Prime Minister between 1566 and 1578. After the 1578 elections, when Rufino Donato (UDN candidate) was unable to form a government in the divided Magentinian National Assembly, the new Liberal Party's leader, Emiliano Lafuente, broke the electoral alliance and look support from opposition lawmakers with a more right-leaning government platform.

As consequence, Emiliano Lafuente became Prime Minister, and formed a coalition government with the center-right Action for the Republic (Acción por la República), forming a joint minority government with the support of the Conservative Party and, in some cases, the ultra-nationalist MSM.

A year ago, the Liberal Party and AplR decided to consolidate their coalition government agreeing to form an electoral coalition together. Since 1580, former AplR leader Clemente Aguafuertes was appointed as President of the Republic.

Liberal Action for the Republic is running with a right-leaning and fiscal conserative economic platform, moderate on social issues, and a strict neutrality on foreign policy (no involvement in geopolitical disputes or international organizations beyond the Mandavines region). Compared to the former government, the Liberal Party-AplR coalition government has been slightly less productive, and with a more restrictive immigration policy as more striking feature. It has as well introduced moderate social cuts while introducing agriculture subsidies for Magentinian farmers -an industrial policy abandoned a decade ago.

Reform Party (Partido Reformista)

Along the Liberal Party, the Reform Party has been one of the two dominant political parties in the 16th century. In the 1550s, however, the party declined its influence and support, although it remained in government from 1562 to 1578, holding important ministries and the Presidency of the Republic from 1567 to 1572, in the person of Reform Party's leader Cándido Próspero. Reform Party and Liberal Party had run together in a joint electoral coalition, the UDN, since 1566, but after 1578 elections that alliance broke up, and the Reform Party remained as the second largest party of the opposition.

The Reform Party runs with a social-liberal platform, free-market on social issues and centrist on social issues. On foreign policy, it defends the traditional Magentinian neutrality policy, slightly more pro-immigration that the current government. Since 1576, their leader is Cecilia Montes, former Minister of Education.

Social Democratic Party (Partido Social Demócrata, PSD)

The Social Democratic Party is a center-left political party, founded in 1547. The Social Democratic Party has never been in government and after entering in parliament in 1550 and 1554, it failed to do so four years later. They were able to return in 1558, however, and since then they have consistently increasing their share of the vote. They obtained 51 MPs in 1570, and in 1574 they became for first time the main opposition party, after ending only 2 seats behind the ruling UDN. In the 1578 elections, the Social Democratic Party was the largest political party in the parliament, but their leader Severino Albarracín failed to form a government. The Social Democrats hope to obtain a larger majority this time which could allow them to form a government for first time in their history.

As the main left-wing political party in Magentina, the PSD has a rather progressive stance on social and moral issues, although it tends to focus on economic policy. It defends a social democratic and reformist economic program, free from any radicalism or revolutionary orientation, which aims to increase funding to education and healthcare and the creation of social welfare programs for the poor. On fiscal policy, the PSD believes the government should have a more important role in the economy, although it is opposed to nationalization of private companies. On foreign policy, the PSD defends a more active foreign policy, specially in cooperation with other liberal democracies, although avoiding involvement in military conflicts of any kind.

The PSD's leader is Antonina Cabrera, a veteran lawmaker.

Social Alliance (Alianza Social de Magentina)

Social Aliance (ASM) is a left-wing coaltion, which includes the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP was founded in 1564 by philosopher Tácito Hedilla, with a Left-Libertarian program. Clarisa Montes, a Professor of Political Economy in the National University of Rivaralda, was their leader from 1569 to 1580. In 1574, ASM entered into parliament for first time in history, obtaining 37 seats, but they had a disappointing result four year later, with only 11 seats. Since 1581, their leader is Germano Sauceda, a sociologist who has been in the National Assembly since 1574.

The Social Alliance has a very liberal and progressive policy on social and moral issues, including abortion, legalization of drugs, protection of environment, feminism gay rights, and defense of civil rights. Their voters are mostly students, liberal professional and urban left-wing voters who consider that the PSD is becoming too moderate in social issues. On economic policy, however, the Social Alliance has a rather free-market orientation, often defined and criticized as "social capitalism", including state support cooperatives and small business, and the establishment of a basic income for all Magetinean citizens instead of direct state intervention in the economy.

On foreign policy, the Social Alliance proposes a "progressive foreign policy", although focused on diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.

Conservative Party (Partido Conservador de Magentina, PCM)
The Conservative Party is the oldest political party in Magentina, founded almost two centuries ago, although it hasn't been in power since 1506. Once the largest political force in the island, it has been long reduced as a minority political party, representing the interests of rural businessmen and peasants. Although they barely entered in the parliament in 1574, they had a surprising result in 1578, becoming the fourth largest political party in the parliament with 39 seats.

Although the Conservatives have kept their traditional protectionist position on economic policy, they have lately shifted their focus on more cultural and moral issues, aligning with the most conservative currents in the Sentric Church. On foreign policy, the Conservative Party is isolationist, and it proposes a more strict immigration policy, specially regarding non-Messanic countries. Their current leader is Emiliano Martino, a former mayor of Villadulce, the ninth town of the country.

National Movement for Magentina (Movimiento Nacional de Magentina, MSM)

The National Movement for Magentina (previously known as Nationalist Democratic Party of Magetina from 1556 and 1563) is a right-wing political party. On social and moral issues, it has moderate positions. On economic policy, it has rather protectionist policies, defending that "Magentina interests should come first than foreign ones". As a result, it has populist economic program, not opposed to a market economy, but aimed to defend the national economy. It is opposed to free trade and it has clearly anti-immigration positions.

Their leader is Augusto Maldonado, a 51-year old lawyer and a distant relative of both Ramiro Maldonado (Chief Minister from 1454 to 1463, and first President of Magetina after independence in 1463) and his nephew Luciano Maldonado (President of Magentina from 1480 to 1486), which made him a quite distinctive but controversial candidate. While Ramiro Maldonado is often considered "a Hero for Independence" and the "Father of Magentina", his nephew Luciano has been regarded historically as an autocratic ruler which would lead the country to its first and last civil war in 1486. Augusto Maldonado, however, has often claimed that he has been personally "inspired by both historical statesmen", but arguing that his political movement doesn't pretend to imitate the past.

It is often denounced as a far-right political party, and considered a marginal political party before 1578. On foreign policy, Augusto Maldonado has promised to end Magentina's neutrality and increasing spending in Defense as long as possible, while keeping "friendly relations" with Magentina's neighbor countries. Maldonado has also called to end the "open border policy" for refugees and political dissidents of other countries.

In 1578, the MSM entered in the National Assembly for first time. The party obtained 32 seats, and it has pushed Emiliano Lafuente's government toward more right-leaning positions, such as a more restrictive immigration law, a limited reform in the refugee legislation, and introducing subsidies for agriculture workers. However, Maldonado claims this is not enough, and he hopes to introduce more radical changes if he is elected Prime Minister.

  Crusader Kings 2 Brigidna
Posted by: Flo - 03-10-2017, 03:28 PM - Forum: The Gameroom - Replies (15)

Hey guys,

I'm definitely going to be trying my hand at a crusader kings mod using the convenient generator. The initial generation wont be so bad I dont think, but afterwards comes quite a bit of localisation work as well as event creation etc.

This is going to primarily focus on western brigidna. I'm not sure what that means just yet, but it's not going to be an insanely huge thing at first, I dont think. If its easier than I expect, maybe we could go as far as silly angiris. I'm not sure about that yet though. I'm not sure if I'll go further north than mordvania either. We'll see how easy it is to generate stuff.

Some things we need to look at.

Starting dates - when is the most interesting time to start, what would the state of various places be?
Possible events and invasions, etc.
interesting flavor decisions or characters (you better believe I'm going to sprinkle us in the various provinces Wink
culture information: if your culture is going to be used, it would be good to have information related to that culture
-Male names
-Female names
-Names for the following titles: baron, count, duke, king, emperor, mayor

Religions have a bunch of other parameters, but idk what those are at the moment

Anyway, thoughts would be great. This is a medieval game obviously, so that will be where the focus lies mostly, historically speaking.

For the record, the map is below
