Announcing The Dominion Chronicles
#1
The Dominion Chronicles is a planned series of RP threads/story-telling events that will take place in various cities and territories of the Angirisian Dominion. I'm planning them in three "trilogies", each three "episodes" long. This is the first real attempt I'm making at more character-level roleplay instead of using a national-level point-of-view. Among the characters you may see throughout these trilogies include the Emperor, the remaining members of his family, and many members of the Imperial Council and Senate, including newly-installed Foreign Secretary Mariska Janeway, who I have planned to have an integral part of this immense saga.

The first trilogy will deal with the twilight days of Emperor Tyrael's reign. After a quarter-century on the Throne, Tyrael's health is slowly beginning to fail him. Having now outlived his father, having reached a point that not many emperors in Angirisian history have reached, and after bringing an end to the long-lived Empire and birthed the Dominion through military might and economic growth, Tyrael begins to ponder what lays in his future. Unbeknownst to him, those around him are pondering their futures too. Crown Prince Albrecht, the Emperor's brother and heir apparent, is biding his time in hopes that his older brother merely abdicates the Throne in his favor instead of dying in the chair like their father did. Mariska Janeway, the new Foreign Secretary of the Dominion, is in her own way hoping to make her mark with shrewd political maneuvers and skillful diplomatic prowess with the goal of perhaps one day becoming the first reigning Empress in Angirisian history. The Dominion Senate, though seen as a representative body of the citizenry but lacking any real power, has begun to grow sick and tired of being the Emperor and his administration's puppets. With the Emperor's decline and the apparent infighting amongst the Emperor's officials, the Senate believes it can take away some of the power it has lost to the Throne.

The Angirisian Dominion is heading for a period of uncertainty, and perhaps conflict on a scale it has not borne witness to in many centuries. How will the many personalities and agendas involved clash and intertwine with one another? Only time can tell...

Now that I've gotten THAT out of the way, I am open to any ideas, suggestions or maybe interest in playing the role of one of the many characters in this series you all may have. Forewarning: for the first episode, both Emperor Tyrael and Mariska Janeway are off-limits as I will be playing out their interactions. Anyone else, including Prince Albrecht, is fair game.

I WILL USURP YOU FROM THE INSIDE PARTICIPATE.

QUESTION: is this set to start IC present day?

QUESTION: How old is the crown prince supposed to be? Do you have anything in mind for him or can the player mold him as they wish?

QUESTION: What kinda succession law does Angiris have, that some random lady hopes to become Empress?

QUESTION: How is political and hard power distributed within Angiris? I pressume the Emperor is rightfully the final authority on everything, but how much influence does his appointee have over the military? And the security services? Does the Senate have any real chance of successfully usurping power without the backing of a popular movement?

QUESTION: Does Angiris have lower nobility (dukes and such) and, if so, what kinda privileges do they have?

QUESTION: The Emperor has no kids, right? Does he have a wifu, tho?

QUESTION: Does Angiris have lower nobility (dukes and such) and, if so, what kinda privileges do they have?

QUESTION: The Emperor has no kids, right? Does he have a wifu, tho?

1: Yes, this is set to start generally in the present day.

2: Tyrael himself is 60 years old now, and Albrecht is six years his junior making him 54. Albrecht is generally just like his brother, though he is by far a bit more empathetic and generally friendlier than Tyrael, who's gotten colder and harsher in his old age. However most of Albrecht's personality can be left up to the player.

3/5: This is the tricky area. Under current standing Dominion law, a dynasty survives so long as the family maintains their bloodline as is the case in most countries. However should a monarch die with no heir and/or no surviving relatives, then the Senate gets the power to "elect" a new dynasty. Tyrael did not marry and thus has no kids, but he did name Albrecht his heir apparent to the Throne. Which means should Tyrael die, Albrecht would then become Emperor of Angiris.

Then there is the abdication clause...

If an Emperor for any reason abdicates the Throne, whether by choice or is forced to do it, then the dynasty ends and the Senate is entitled to elect a new one. So... should Tyrael simply abdicate the Throne, then Albrecht might get screwed out of the Throne. It's never happened that way, but it is at that point possible that someone like Janeway or anyone else could potentially become the next Emperor/Empress and create a new dynasty.

4: There is no lower nobility in Angiris, though there are "orders" similar to ones in Britain that individuals can be named to by the Emperor or even by the Senate with the assent of the Emperor.

6: Power distribution really depends on whoever sits on the Throne. Tyrael likes to have the absolute final say on many important matters but does give subordinates a fair degree of autonomy to conduct business. For example, even though Tyrael is recognized as the commander-in-chief of the Dominion Legions, during the war in Drazen he let General Belisarius take a large amount of field responsibility and command over the northern theater of combat while Tyrael largely focused on the eastern theater. Another example would be Janeway, who would have a considerable amount of leeway in negotiating treaties and agreements with foreign powers even with Tyrael having to okay everything and make changes if he feels Janeway misses something.

For the Senate, usurping power is not necessarily their goal. Rather there are those in the Senate who feel the Throne has way too much power at the expense of the Citizens and thus want to balance the scales a bit. The Senate does not want to get rid of the monarchy. Right now Angiris since the retcons is back to a near-absolute monarchy. The Senate in this instance would want to make Angiris a little more like the country was before the retcons, a constitutional monarchy.

Albercht is pretty old, to the point it's questionable he'd believe the senate would appoint him Emperor following Tyrael's abdication. Unless the Senate is expected by tradition to "elect" the emperor's choice of heir? But if that's the case, they would literally be stealing the throne from him. Das not cool. Imperialist officers should totally have something to say about that.

Is Albercht supposed to have kids?

Who are candidates for the throne in case of abdication? Any Angirisian, or only relatives, current government officials, and high officers?

I assume Tyrael and Albercht are supposed to have a good relationship?

Is it known that the Senate feels it needs more powers? By the public, or even just the security services/monarchy?

1: The Senate isn't expected to do anything, but traditionally in cases of abdication the Senate has nearly always gone along with the Emperor's chosen heir. Therefore it would be extremely irregular for the Senate - should Tyrael abdicate - to bypass Albrecht and elect someone else.

2: Albrecht does have three children; Prince Aeran, aged 39; Princess Coranna, aged 32; and Prince Oranos, aged 30.

3: In case of abdication, by written law any Angirisian could technically become Emperor but by tradition it has usually been someone within the government whether it be a high ranking councilor or military commander. Only once has an Emperor been elected from the Senate (the first Emperor Cain I). So someone like General Belisarius or Foreign Secretary Janeway could be elected.

4: Tyrael and Albrecht have a decent relationship.

5: More than one Senator has in public said that they feel the Senate needs more powers to adequately represent their constituents. While the administration takes this seriously, it doesn't feel the situation would necessarily reach a boiling point where an armed conflict could arise. Tyrael, as well as most members of his government, would rather negotiate and talk it out rather than fight it out.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Are there any particular results you're partial too or are you receptive of come what may?

What kinda limits are you imposing on players?

Were Albercht to die before Tyrael, his son would be heir, I assume?

1: Well the only thing that I know for sure that needs to happen is the eventual end of Tyrael's reign as Emperor. Other than that, let the chips fall where they will.

2: Obviously don't do anything that could purposely destroy the Dominion government or cause a civil war. We'd like to try and avoid that as much as possible.

3: Yes. Albrecht's children are a continuation of the Leoric bloodline and so should Albrecht die before Tyrael, then Prince Aeran would then become the heir to the Throne.

Okay...

I have decided to really give this another go although in a much different way.

You may have noticed in recent days some tweets from the Angirisian News Network talking about a series of demonstrations led by a group of people calling themselves "Romulans". What you all don't know is that these demonstrations are the seeds being planted of a larger rebellion that could radically change or even topple the Angirisian government and way of life.

Matters have remained largely non-violent... though not for much longer. Could this devolve into a revolution? Probably. Civil war? Maybe. All depends on how the Romulans and the Dominion act. I'm still putting together the various elements of the Romulan movement and how each element plays into the larger story.
