Hey everyone. I had an idea; don't groan too loudly.
So over the past couple weeks, I had and have mulled over the idea of having an ongoing forum game/challenge that doesn't quite belong in the spam section, so I figure I'll put it here.
If anyone remembers from some odd years ago, Geoguessr was a bit if an internet fad that popped up with the help of some youtubers, as all fads from some odd years ago were want to do. Geoguessr is kind of a "Where's Waldo" (or Wally, if you're weird) of map games, except you're the Waldo: you get plopped into Google maps street view on a stretch of road somewhere in the world (or sometimes not on a road), and its up to you to pinpoint on a map where you think you are., with closer guesses garnering more points. Each guess is a round, with each round starting you in a different location, and each game consists of five rounds; at the end of the game, all your points are totaled, and a final score is given.
For the game, you can check here: http://geoguessr.com
It's pretty simple, but quite fun. Anyway, I approached Sal with an idea and she seemed interested, so I'll give it here.
What I want to do is a sort of ongoing Geoguessr challenge, a sort of Gran Prix. Each month I'll create/start and post one or two or so challenges and share that challenge here for people to participate in. People post their results or send them to me (being sure to keep the "solution" hidden that the game gives you after you finish), and I I keep track of them. At the end of every month, your best (or maybe even worst, you decide?) results are kept, tabulated and ranked.
The idea is that there's more than just recognition for first place: best score, worst score, the person dead in the middle of the pack (like bunco scoring, kinda), person to get closest to a "1337" score, and any other sorts of categories people come up with can be tracked and "rewarded" with a shout-out.
Anyway, let me know - preferably here - if you're interested. For your enjoyment (and to get used to the game), and to make sure this works as I hope it works. I've posted a link below to a sample warm-up challenge; good luck, and have fun:
