Basic concepts of road cycling

Types of stages. There are different types of stages, depending on characteristics and terrain.

• Team time-trial: a road-based bicycle race in which teams of cyclists race against the clock.
  
• Individual time-trial: a road bicycle race in which cyclists race alone against the clock.
  
• On-line or flat stage: a road race on almost perfectly flat terrain. If there's no a breakaway, the victory will be decided by the fastest riders of the peloton, known as sprinters.
  
• Hill stage: a road race with some undulating or hilly terrain. There are more chances for a breakaway, given bigger chances for climbers and classics specialists. It is mostly a resistance race, and the time differences are not usually very big.
  
• Mountain stage: a road race on mountainous terrain. Grand Tours' general classification is often decided in this kind of stages, where climber specialists impose and try to create big time differences.
  

Types of riders. There are different types of cycling riders, depending on the terrain.

• Time trialists: A rider that can generate relatively high power over long periods of time in a race against the clock. A specialist on time-trial stages, which is also good on flat stages (but slower than sprinters), but they do not perform well on hilly or mountain stages.
  
• Sprinter: A rider with the ability to generate very high power over short periods (a few seconds to a minute) allowing for great finishing speeds, but usually unable to sustain sufficiently high power over long periods to be a good time triallist, and is usually too big to have a high enough power-to-weight ratio to be a good climber. The fastest riders of the peloton, who are more likely to impose to the rest of riders of the peloton on the last metres. Good on flat stages, not so good for hill stages, while certainly bad at a mountain races. They are likely to win many road races, but they will perform bad on general classification.
  
• Rouleur: a rider who is strong on flat and undulating roads. Although not so fast as sprinters, they perform well on flat and hilly stages. Not so good on mountain stages.
  
• Domestique: a rider whose job it is to support and work for other riders in their team. They aren't very good in any kind of terrain or stages, but they help your team's leader.
  
• Climber: a rider who specializes in riding uphill quickly, usually due to having a high power-to-weight ratio. They're very good on hilly and mountain stages, not so good on flat stages while they perform badly on time-trial stages. They have big chances of winning a Grand Tour, if they do not perform too bad on time-trial stages.
  
• All-rounder: a racing cyclist who excels in both climbing and time trialing, and may also be a decent sprinter. They're good on all terrains (although not as good as the own specialists). They may not win many road stages, but they have big chances of winning a Grand Tour's general classification

There are many ways to combinate the different type of riders for your team, and success will be highly influenced by luck at the end. But having a team which a clear goal will help your team to be successful, or increase their chances to win and improve. For the sake of simplicity, we can say that there are three types of team: the balanced team, the general classification-oriented team, and the sprint-oriented team.

Team type 1: the balanced team
Description	Advantages	Disadvantages
This team model combines riders of all types, aspiring to be competitive in general classification and team classification, and winning individual stages as well. It is typically formed by: 1-2 all-rounders/climbers 1 sprinter 1-2 time-trialists/rouleurs 1-2 domestiques (Remember that seven riders is the maximum) A larger number of domestiques would help you in high mountain stages, for example; while a larger number of time-trialists/rouleurs would help you in team trial stages.	Average chances to fight for the top positions of the general classification Average chances to fight for the team classification Average chances to win one or several stages If you all-rounder/climber does a poor performance, maybe your sprinter will save your season, and vice versa.	Sprint-oriented teams are likely to win more individual stages than your team (although you would still have good chances of winning one or at least getting enough SCA Ranking points) All-rounders/climbers from general classification-oriented teams have a slightly advantage over your team's, although not necessarily a decisive one.

Team type 2: the general classification-oriented team
Description	Advantages	Disadvantages
This team model focuses to win the Grand Tour, and winning individual stages (although they will keep trying) becomes a secondary goal. It is typically formed by: 1-3 all-rounders/climbers 1-3 time-trialists/rouleurs 1-3 domestiques (Remember that seven riders is the maximum) A larger number of domestiques would help you in high mountain stages, for example; while a larger number of time-trialists/rouleurs would help you in team trial stages.	Higher chances to fight for the top positions of the general classification Higher chances to win the team classification Higher chances to win high mountain stages (and therefore, the Mountain classification as well)	If your all-rounders/climbers do poorly your team will have a low SCA Ranking that season (and therefore, you may not be invited to both Grand Tours the next season - only to the lame Ceribian Tour, if your team really ends between the lowest of the ranking) Not likely you will win many flat and hilly stages (there are still chances, but lower compared to the other types of teams)

Team type 3: the sprint-oriented team
Description	Advantages	Disadvantages
This team model focuses to win as many individual stages as possible, aiming to win the Point classification as well. It is typically formed by: 1-3 sprinters 1-4 time-trialists/rouleurs (Remember that seven riders is the maximum)	Higher chances to win several individual stages Higher chances to win the Point classification	No chances to win the general classificatiton No chances to win the team classification No chances to win high mountain stages and the Mountain classification

More things to considerate:

• Domestiques, time-trialists, and rouleurs improve the performance of their teammates for some type of stages (read above) but that effect is not unlimited. It is not recommended to have more than three domestiques in your team, unless you want to do it really poorly in the team classification.
  
• As your riders get old, they may lose some points and their performance would worsen, or even being downgraded [so a sprinter becomes a rouleur in his late years, a climber a domestique, and an all-rounder a rouleur]. At the same time, your riders may get some bonus points for their victories and good results, which would allow them to improve their performance or at least having a longer career. So not all riders are as good as the rest, even if compared to the rest of cyclist of his same type of rider.
  
• This Guide is only an advise, and you can try your own combination for your teams.
  
• If you're lazy enough, yes, you can still simply throw names at me so I can decide for you (the balanced team is used as standard).

The Syoran Cycling Association will have elections this year, the first to be hold in character.

Between today and October 2, applications for candidates are open.

Voting will be opened between October 3 and 23. The elections are being hold IC on Vintyr 1579.


Rules:

1. Any nation which has a cycling federation as active member of the Sioran Cycling Association can propose a candidate, but no more than one per nation.

2. The elected president of the Sioran Sycling Association will have a limited control on SCA decisions and public statements, but not an absolute one. Just for RP and realism purposes.

3. The anti-doping stance of your candidate will have a OOC impact of the % chances of doped riders to test positive, as new RP feature.

Candidate Name: Georges Marquette
Candidate Nation: Valland
Candidate Age: 64
Candidate Info: Marquette comes from a family of cyclists. Both his father and uncle were professional riders, winning the later three Tour de Valland individual stages during the 1520s. He is also married with a Eskkyan retired professional cyclist and sport journalist. Marquette became professional cyclist in 1534 but retired in 1538. From 1541 to 1552, he was president of the Vallish Association of Professional Riders.

He was chairman of the Vallish Cycling Association from 1555 to 1566. He's often praised for modernizing the cycling federation, improving its finances, and introducing important administrative reforms. However, early 1560s were years of many doping scandals, some of them involving Vallish teams, specially during the 1561 and 1564 Tour de Valland. He was often criticized to not doing enough to fight doping during those years, and two Vallish Cycling Association officials had to resign for corruption and covering doped riders. But Vallish courts cleared Marquette of any wrongdoing.

He was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Sioran Cycling Association in 1569, after Alstarian Christian Sondermüller was elected as Chairman, and he remained in the position until today. Despite the controversies which surrounded Marquette's years in the Vallish Association, Sondermüller was elected on a strict platform against doping in cycling, and Sondermüller and Marquette passed several reforms to improve the fight against doping and increase the budget for anti-doping testing. As his right-hand, Marquette is seen as a candidate which will continue Sondermüller's policies.

Candidate Name: Stanislav Srebotnjek
Candidate Nation: Mordvania
Candidate Age: 46
Candidate Info: A retired professional road race cyclist, he rode most of his career in Biyran and Ceribian teams, with very modest achievements. In 1568, he was hired by the Mordvanian Cycling Federation to manage the Mordvanian Youth cycling team. He was elected chairman of the Mordvanian Cycling Federation in 1574.
Candidate Program: Srebotnjek has promise a zero-tolerance policy to fight doping and corruption in the SCA. His main proposal is to introduce a life-ban for those cyclists who test positive after returning from a sanction for doping. Another of his controversial proposals is that Global Tour cycling races are not forced to invite a top SCA Ranking teams if they had at least three riders tested for positive for doping in the previous two seasons, even if the teams are cleared of any direct wrongdoing.

Srebotnjek has also proposed creating a fund for promoting cycling between youth, and to study the creation of continental championships for national teams.

Candidate Nation: Sainam
Candidate Age: 57
Candidate Info: Yukimura Matsuko is former top female Sainamese cyclist and politician. As a cyclist, Yukimura won three Olympic medals, including the women's time trails at the 1546 and 1550 games, along with a few other achievements that were available for female cyclists in the Ostaran and world stage.

Following Yukimura's retirement from cycling, she was a member of the Sainamese National Assembly for the Social Democratic Party from 1564 to 1570. In 1570, she was elected a vice-president of the Sainamese Cycling Union (SCU), and re-elected for another five-year term in 1575.
Candidate Program: Along with plans to further support the development of the sport from the youth level, Yukimura also wants to put in place tougher punishments for cyclists caught caught doping, such as lengthening the years of banning a cyclists faces after being caught, or perhaps even placing a life ban upon them. An increase in testing for dopers is also being proposed.

She also proposes expulsion and permanent banning of any federation caught aiding cyclists or teams to dope in any cycling event. Corruption is also an issue to be taken up by Yukimura, with plans to adopt a Oversight Committee modeled after the one created by SIFA President Vilmar Knutsen.

Yes, you have heard correctly, from know your will register for two seasons in advance, in order to save me some time. So it is recommended to plan your teams carefully, specially considering the age and type of riders of your teams. Some minor changes could be allowed for RP reasons between both seasons, but it is recommended to tell me so in advance.

As usual, you must send me your applications as a PM message in the forums. You can find the application template in the first post of this thread. I have added two "Guide of Cycling" introductions to help you to make better teams.

If you have already a professional team from previous seasons, but you don't care much about the details, you can simply send me a list of riders (with at least name & nationality) and they will be added to your existing teams.
