Halvadag, Lanlania | As an eventful year in West Brigidna nearly reaches its midway point there are further changes, this time in the Holy Lanlanian Empire as a deep-rooted plot to overthrow the government was recently upended as violent altercations took place across the capital city of Halvadag.

Halvadag, the city of the world, seat to the most influential state of the previous century, was in shambles this past week as violent riots rocked the city. After the unearthing of a plot to overthrow the government, Prime Minister Alfred Aria Sulkholm was arrested by government officials less than two weeks ago. While the arrest was successful, various factions in the capital loyal to Sulkholm revolted violently. Calling themselves the Golden Guard, these paramilitary forces, as well as those affiliated with Sulkholms Imperial-Sentric Party, attacked government officials and tried to free their leader.

The conflict lasted days though as of yesterday the situation has grown calm enough to begin assessing the damage. The Emperor spoke on a world-wide television broadcast and promised, among other things, to host officials from across the empire to "discuss the State of the Empire".

The Florinthian government has reached out to the Holy-Lanlanian Empire to offer any assistance it could, particularly during the violence. The military was partially mobilized as well. Prime Minister Ben Blanckenship offered his own words for what he called one of Florinthus' "oldest and most reliable neighbors". While it is not unknown that Denil had no love lost for the ISP, who had been growing in power in the Empire, surely there were none who expected such high crimes from the seemingly roguish party.

With the situation in Lanlania up in the air presently, markets across West Brigidna have seen twenty year lows in stock value as the market tries to self-regulate before a potential Lanlanian disaster.

Denil, Florinthus | With the elections for the 18th Federal Assembly in 1586 incoming, Prime Minister Ben Blanckenship has announced he will not be participating in the next election cycle and will seek retirement from public office.

Blanckenship has been involved in government for the better part of three decades and has been Prime Minister since the Centrists landmark victory in the 1574 elections. In the time since Blanckenship has done much to establish a new Florinthian perspective, one of moderation and pragmatic foreign affairs. The Federation became a human rights leader in its handling of the Wadiyan refugee crisis, and facilitated the end of hostilities in Kaljurand. The Federation also witnessed the creation of the WBEA during Blanckenships tenure, which stands as one of the chief avenues for further West Brigidnan economic cooperation.

It is to be seen whether or not Blanckenships retirement will have a significant effect on the coming elections, and Centrists are wary in selecting their new leader. The other parties see this as an opportunity to fill the gap and re-establish themselves in Florinthian government.

The National Labour Party, once seen as the vogue choice for young people, may struggle for the first time in a few cycles after it was revealed that Party Leader Lauren Harvey was filmed making racially insensitive comments behind closed doors. Meanwhile the Liberal Party will try to get back to it's roots after abandoning the Walter Philmore experiment. Philmore, after his failure in the 1580 Elections, was ousted as party leader and is not expected to win his own seat in the next election. The Federalist Party too will try to take an aggressive stance against what it sees as Centrist stagnation and open border failures to galvanize a population of new voters who haven't seen them as a viable option.

Florinthian Manager Owen Smitley Needs a Result in the Brigidna Cup to Keep his Job, Many Believe

After an abysmal world cup performance, featuring only one win among the three group stage matches and failing to get out of the group for the first time in several decades, Manager Owen Smitley was nearly sacked. "Give me time" he said in a presser following their final group stage match, a victory against lowly Sainam, "and I will take this team to the top."

The FA, it seems, believed him, or maybe they were more interested in avoiding buying out his heft contract that ran through 1586. Hired following the retirement of former manager Alf Olhouser, Smitley was expected to bring his excellent tactical acumen and a brilliant defensive mind to the national team who simply put, gave up too many goals. What resulted was a defensive manager being given reign over a talent pool that screamed for aggressive, attacking football. Simply put, they men on the pitch didn't match the plans of the manager. The result was one of the worst world cup outings for the Florinthians ever. Smitley was not given the sack, however, and vowed to make things right in the Brigidna Cup.

The team put the best foot forward in qualifying, dominating their opposition and going undefeated, with a 9-3-0 record and only allowing three goals against in the twelve matches. After easily qualifying, Smitley announced this was the tournament they would turn things around.

Things were not made easier by the draw, however. Instead of being drawn with one of the four hosts, Florinthus, in pot 2, was placed with Severyane, who were a single penalty from winning the previous World Cup. Smitley seemed pleased however.

"Surely you have to beat the best," he said, "to be the best. It's certainly not the easiest draw but I would have it no other way. These youngsters need to play the best to develop." Youngsters indeed -- the previous world cup roster was the youngest ever to wear the maroon and white, and the same precedent was set in the Brigidna Cup, with an average age of 21, not the youngest at the event but surely the youngest for Florinthus.

Many are managing their expectations for the Maroon Stars, as the youth brought in suggests gaining experience rather than winning the tournament. The experience gained would then prepare the players for a World Cup run next year. While that certainly may be the case, Smitley still remains determined to get good results at this tournament.

A View of the Border Connecting Galeae and Vienland

While the WBEA has proven a strong contributor to high economic performance in member states, it has struggled in its efforts to expand to include other states beyond the four already included. With rumors that states such as Kave and Ostland may be considering joining the agreement one WBEA official made the audacious prediction that by 1625 we may be seeing an economic area stretching from "Halvadag to Krasnograd".

The claim is indeed a great one, the two states in question being very distant, one in Lanlania and the other being on the far side of Severyane. Furthermore, the WBEA has yet to expand to any nations outside of the four founding members, Florinthus, Galeae, Oslanburg, and Vienland. For the better part of a decade, expansion of the economic area has seen roadblocks in the form of nations refusing to work with states like Oslanburg and Galeae, who were gripped by controversial governments. With the dissolution of these governments and the reinstating of true democratic rule there are now inroads being made to include other nearby nations into the WBEA.

The official, Florinthian Steven Coolidge, has been a WBEA official since 1578, when he was sent by the Blanckenship administration. He says the ultimate goal of the WBEA is to have an economic area that binds all of Brigidna together for the greater good. "Prosperity does not just belong to us. It's something we can all reach together by tearing down the barriers that separate us." He said before making his claim.

Government issues aside, there is no surprise that places like Kave and Ostland are considering joining. With the formation of the WBEA, certain restrictions and tariffs were put in place for external trade, and this has put difficulty on the economies of the small nations. Ostland in particular gets much of its business from nearby Oslanburg. Special rates were introduced for Kave and Ostland early on, to ensure the economic impact was lessened, but not to the extent it would be under the same economic area.

No decisions have been made yet, but a WBEA delegation has already visited both states to discuss the potential for their joining the agreement and to make possible negotiations. No announcements have been made, however.

Doug Greene Managing AFC Denil Last Season

The Kazemuran FA has recently announced that Doug Greene, AFC Denil and Florinthus legend, will manage their national team.

Greene has been the top man for AFC Denil for over a decade. He was a legend as a player after spending his entire career there, bringing home eight FA League trophies and at least a dozen other cups, including two FBFA Cups and a Club World Championship trophy. After his retirement in 1570, he stayed involved with the club while getting his management licenses and by 1572 he was announced as the new manager. During his fourteen year stint as manager, AFC Denil won another six FA League trophies and seven other trophies, including a single FBFA Cup.

His move does not come as a terrible surprise, however, as he had been hinting that he might leave AFC Denil for international management over the last few years, should the right job come up. While he certainly has ambitions for managing the Florinthian national team the first opportunity to come knocking came from Kazemura.

The Kazemuran FA has been something of an up and comer over the last few decades, culminating in an FBFA Cup victory in 1581, but after tumbling out in the most recent FBFA Cup and failing to qualify for the 1586 World Cup it was time to move on from their previous manager.

Greene is reportedly "very excited" for the new opportunity to break into international management where he hopes he can turn the Kazemuran national team around. His contract runs through 1590, so he will have a few tournaments to prepare for before he'll have to worry about his contract.

WBEA Integration Has Been a Major Talking Point in the Run Up to the 1586 Election

With the coming elections a year away, debates have already sprung up across the Federation as politicians and citizens alike prepare. While it has been an issue over the last three elections, the topic of the WBEA and further integration has proven to be a major sticking point in this election, with many already predicting the 1586 election to be a referendum of sorts on regional cooperation and integration.

While still in initial stages, there has been buzz among those affiliated with the WBEA on the prospect of further, non-economic integration between the members. While the WBEA wouldn't be affiliated specifically with any such actions, those currently working in the organization have spoken with excitement that the member governments have been making slow but steady steps towards something greater, though nothing serious has been decided yet.

In the meantime, the Federation approaches the 1586 elections with earnest, as the retirement of Ben Blanckenship, one of the primary proponents for the WBEA and regional cooperation, weighs heavily on the minds of voters. The Centrists, maintaining their stance, have come out clean that, while they wouldn't commit to anything serious, they would be open to talks on further cooperation with other WBEA members. The Federalists meanwhile, slammed the Centrists for risking Florinthian interests by yoking the Federation with states who have different attitudes on some issues, beyond obvious cultural and lingual differences.

The other parties have been more mum on the topic, though a few leading Liberal candidates have voiced dissent, while National Labour and Green candidates have appeared more sympathetic. Blanckenship himself refused to comment, stating this was a job and decision for the next set of leaders and that the election would show which side the people align with.

Florinthian politics has often been divided into eras marked by strong leadership bookended by pivotal elections. Many are expecting this next election to be one of those bookends, and so tension is high as candidates jockey for position within the hearts and minds of voters.

In 1580, the Federal Assembly was expanded to two hundred seats, the first expansion in nearly a century, to wide acclaim. At the time, it was thought it would be the last expansion for some time, but in the run-ups to the 1586 election, there is buzz growing that the Assembly may look to expand again.

The original expansion was agreed upon early in the 16th Federal Convention and in 1580, the new seats were opened up. There were few who opposed the growth -- an odd moment of unanimous support in the Assembly. The expansion allowed parties that were traditionally crowded out, such as the Greens and Left, a chance to make traction and represent their agenda in Denil. While the expansion was widely popular, few expected it to be repeated any time soon, but now, six years later, many candidates are speaking about it.

"We hadn't really considered it when we prepared our agenda for the election," Centrist leader Andre Gouhlaman said in a private interview, "But in the time we have been campaigning there has been considerable interest from constituents -- certainly more so than I would have expected."

Presently, there are two hundred seats, including the Prime Ministers chair. Previously there were 148 seats in the Assembly. There hasn't been any official word on what further expansion would represent, but estimates have been all over the board, from 250 to over 300. A poll put on by Dafta, a leading poll in the Federation, estimates that most Florinthians approve of further expansion, though there is hardly the same agreement on how much it should be expanded. Support is all over the board, although most of those polled approve something between 240 and 280. A shocking 18% of those polled supported expansion to over 300 seats.

Certainly small parties are most excited about the prospect of expansion, however, as they would be looking at a real chance to gain seats, just as the Greens and Left have done previously.

The 1586 General Elections are finished and it was a big win for the Centrist Party, who were only 17 seats from an outright majority. A renewed government with the Greens has established their control of the legislature though, and Centrist leader Andre Gouhlaman was elected Prime Minister to great applause in the Federal Assembly.

The election was also friendly to the Liberals, who saw big gains as people left the National Labour Party. The Federalists also saw a small gain of only two seats. Those two parties have formed an opposition coalition, though it is not certain how much they will be able to push their agenda in a legislature that is seemingly against them.

The Greens and Left both took hits, as many flocked to the more vogue Centrist platform over the more leftist alternatives. The leaders of the Left have announced that, while they have been left out of government talks, there have been constructive conversations with Centrist and Green leaders on key policy issues that could lead to achieving some of their legislative goals.

No one was more burned by this election than the National Labour Party, however. They lost 25 seats, including that of leader Lauren Harvey, leaving the party leaderless and rudderless heading into a difficult legislative term. While nothing has been announced, there are rumors that the party may dissolve in time, certainly not the end result envisioned by the parties leader, the late Guy Fontaine.

The Legislating Chamber of the Federal Assembly

[Denil, Florinthus] The so-called "West Brigidna Union" is now a near certainty after the final hurdle to its creation was passed after a most contentious voting process in the Federal Assembly resulted in a win for unionites.

While the final vote tally of 117-73 doesn't seem like a very close margin it was anything but, as many key voters were seemingly on the fence until the week of the vote. Prime Minister Gouhlaman admitted following the vote that even he was not perfectly certain it would be approved until the votes were cast.

Nays came primarily from the Liberals and what is left of the National Labour Party, though some turncoats voted for Union, much to the chagrine of those in party leadership. As well there were a few Centrists nays coming from those who preferred Florinthus go it alone rather than bind itself to three states who are markedly more conservative than Florinthus.

The Centrist and Green coalition that has run the Federal Assembly for the better part of a decade however sees tis result as a great victory. Cooperation, so they say, is the way of the future, and binding these four like-minded peoples into one ensures a strong and bountiful future for all of them. What is to be seen is how these four peoples will cooperate in government, as there are some marked differences politically among the four members.

Public response has been somewhat mixed, though many are happy for the process to be finished, as the political climate had been growing incredibly hostile and with the final decision being made people can now look forward to what the future holds. For many this is seen as a logical next step as it's already incredibly easy to travel to Oslanburg, Galeae, and Vienland and many of the nations laws are already similar or at the very least conciliatory and understanding of the differences. Still others are irate at the result, and Oslanburgan flags are already being burned in places like Wilmington, where opposition to union has been the most fierce.

Great changes will be coming to West Brigidna in the coming months. Time will tell whether these changes are positive or negative.
