Mainichi Shinpo has been operating in Akitsu for decades now, in fact we are one of the oldest newspapers in All of Akitsu. Founded very shortly after the modernization of Akitsu, we have continued on to create the Mainich Broadcasting Corporation (毎日放送株式会社), called "Mainichi Hōsō" (毎日放送) by those in Akitsu, which is was the second largest radio and television broadcasting corporation in all of Akitsu. We have dedicated ourselves to giving people quality coverage of news, as well as high quality entertainment in our radio and television stations, for this entire time.
But alas, all that will come to an end today. A new legal situation has emerged within Akitsu, where promoting change for the "national polity" has become illegal. This term, left undefined and up to interpretation, has opened Akitsu up to a wide range of new repressive tactics. In effect, all media in Akitsu will now have to be censored or risk being shut down by the government. Mainichi Shinpo refused to abide by the new censorship regulations, but due to continued harrassment by supporters of the new government as well as threats of legal action against us, we are no longer able to continue to remain in Akitsu and have our safety be guarenteed.
In recent times many other Akitian media outlets have found themselves in similar situations. AHK, once the country's leading broadcaster and in fact the country's public broadcaster, was shut down by the new government. It's employees were forced to either accept the new censorship measures by the government or lose out on a job. Those that accepted the new censorship measures were given equivalent positions in the new public broadcaster, Zenkoku Nippō. Luckily for us at Mainichi Shinpo, this will probably not happen. However, as sad as it may be, we also are no longer able to continue operations in Akitsu without having to go through similar harrassment, and with the threats of legal action now coming against us we are now left with little choice but to shut down our largest operation, our operation in Akitsu. Whether we can survive this major blow to our finances is unknown, but if we are to remain an independent media organization it is a necessary measure.
Goodbye Akitsu, our beloved home, perhaps we will cross paths again in the future.

Today in Strathae a speach was given by Blair Gobnet McLucais of the Party of Tradition, which has not been received well by the Reido community in the country. The community, though it's numbers remain low (lower than even the Akhadist community) the followers that it does have remain resolute in it's beliefs. Even as several laws were passed in the country that made Reido worship more difficult, they remained strong, doing their best to work with authorities rather than against authorities in the country to ensure that people could legally practice their faith. But it seems that the community may have finally lost their patience with the government of Strathae.
After a recent speach given by Blair Gobnet McLucais the largest Reido shrine in Strathae, Strathae Kotohira Jingū (ストラサエ金刀比羅神宮) announced that they would be holding a press conference of their own shortly afterwards. Mainichi Shinpo went to cover the event and we were greeted by Kevan Fionnán Neil, one of a very small number of Strathaens that converted to Reido and an even smaller number who actually became a priest. He had some strong words for the speach given by Blair, and harsh criticism of the government of Strathae.
"You talk about tolerance, but it seems that tolerance only covers homosexuality and other genders. It does not seem to extend any further than that." he said "Mrs. McLucais, you seem to have exactly zero tolerance for other faiths. And don't try to explain it away as wanting them to follow Strathaen values, Reido is a religion that your government has declared follows Strathaen values and you have made it more difficult for us to practice our religion as well."
"You made it illegal for us to make larger shrines without a referendum in the community, and if previous precident is to be followed we'd have to pay for that referendum. This essentially made it illegal for us to build larger shrines, as we simply would not have the money for a referendum and a shrine. You passed laws that would have outlawed the hina-nagashi ceremony, had it not been for careful negotiations from representatives of our shrines."
"But of course, we don't have the worst of it. That would be the Akhadist community, which has continually been vilified by the government of Strathae and face a much worse situation. Until now, the Reido community has stood at the sidelines, but after that last speech, which was filled with rhetoric that reminds me of some of the speeches of Hayato Yamaguchi in Akitsu, we can no longer sit in the sidelines. We will offer a helping hand to any Akhadist that needs it, we will support them when they are unjustly discriminated against by their community, we will give them refuge when they are chased by people who hate them. We will stand with them in their time of need."
"This is not to say we will defend homophobia or sexism. We oppose it, and this should be evident considering the government of Strathae has declared us an example of a religion that follows Strathaen values. However, when we are faced with a wave of intolerance of this magnitude we cannot stay back."
"Mrs. McLucais, you talk about not having tolerance for intolerance, how about doing something about the people who hate people of other faiths? And I'm not talking just about Akhadism, how about the 30% of the Strathaen population that will hate people for simply changing faiths no matter what the faith is? The portion of the population that I have received death threats from because I dared do the horrendous act of converting to Reido. Unless you're going to go after all forms of intolerance, you have no right to talk about not toleranting intolerance."

In a surprising twist of events Aodhán Gobnet McLucais, one of the sons of Blair Gobnet McLucais sought refuge in Strathae Kotohira Jingū, after having converted from Brezhigism to Reido just a bit earlier. The boy, only 15 years old, faces massive social shunning from his peers, with some reports suggesting that his friends are having to choose between remaining friends with him or remaining friends with his brothers. The story is still developing, so Mainich Shinpo doesn't have the full details as of yet, but initial reports seem to indicate that this all stems from Aodhán's decision to convert to Reido. Priests at the Shrine have taken him in, and are saying that he will be welcome there for as long as he wishes to stay.
According to some at the Shrine, Aodhán was a regular visitor to the Shrine prior to conversion, having taken part in some rituals. People at the Shrine have described him as a kind boy with an insatiable curiosity, with that curiosity being what led him to the Shrine. They said they were surprised at how much he is being shunned by his peers, describing it as "disturbing".
Kevan Fionnán Neil spoke to Mainich Shinpo about the decision of the Shrine to take him in, stating that it would be a violation of their religious beliefs not to do so.
"He came here asking for refuge," explained Kevan "and Shrines have long been considered a place of refuge. We have always offered a helping hand to those in need, this is no different."
When asked what he thought about the situation, Kevan said he was shocked by what had happened.
"Even though I know why this happened, it still shocks me." he said "I mean, he's her son! and Aodhán hasn't done anything wrong!"
Kevan said that Aodhán would be welcome at the Shrine for as long as he wanted to stay.
Mainichi Shinpo attempted to contact Blair Gobnet McLucais, but she simply refused to acknowledge Aodhán as her son.

In a relatively short period of time after the coup, the new fascist government of Akitsu has effectively embedded itself within Akitian government. This was no doubt in major part due to the quick construction of the Chian Iji Keisatsu (治安維持警察) or Peace Preservation Police, commonly known among Akitians as the Chiankei (治安警), a police force authorized by the fascists only weeks after the coup was conducted. But how in the world were these fascists able to quickly establish and embed a secret police force of this magnitude into Akitsu, a country that until a few years ago was a democracy that respected the rights of every person inside it? This is a question that has puzzled some analysts, but do a little digging and the answer becomes clear.
To understand the origin of the Chiankei, we first need to understand the nature of the Akitian far-right before the coup. The most visible of the Akitian far-right before the coup was the Patriotic Party, but they aren't the ones that we need to examine. The ones we need to examine are the less known far-right organizations that littered Akitsu before the coup. These groups, referred to as Uyoku Dantai (右翼団体), were small in terms of the number of people that openly identified themselves as members. But the number of organizations was very numerous, with them having a foothold in every major Akitian city. We're talking about groups like the Akitian Alliance for Victory over Communism (秋津勝共連合), Shield Society (楯の会), True Heart Society (正気会), and the League of Blood (血盟団). These are just the more well-known examples of Uyoku Dantai in Akitsu, groups that were present in more than one place at a time, there were countless more small ones based only one city and with only a few dozen members at most.
These groups were a constant annoyance for Akitian police. Their conduct was disorderly and disruptive, but police often had difficulties going after them because their speech was protected under law. They often led protests that can only barely be considered not riots, and in many cases had direct conflicts with police at their demonstrations that were only barely within the legal limits. There were many times which the police arrested far-right demonstrators, but this led to it's own problems. Whenever charges were filed against a person arrested in a far-right demonstration, the far-right groups would get together and sue the government for violating free speech. Many police organizations hesitated to act against them, since freedom of speech and freedom of thought was protected in Akitsu it was difficult to arrest these people unless they clearly and irrefutably broke some other law.
This is the reason that the Yakuza, or as they preferred to be called "Chivalrous Organizations" (任侠団体), started getting into the mix. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, Yakuza is a term that refers to Akitian organized crime syndicates. But while these groups are known for doing the standard drug trafficking, human trafficking, extortion, and many other acts that criminal syndicates are known for, not all Yakuza acted this way. In fact, the largest Yakuza gang in Akitsu, the Matsuba-gumi (松葉組) was known to punish it's members for taking part in human trafficking, and the second-largest Yakuza gang in Akitsu, the Suishin-kai (水心会) forbade it's members from taking part in the drug trade. These groups are also typically the fastest to respond in a disaster situation, often times going out and distributing food aid to communities affected by things such as massive earthquakes well before authorities are able to organize a response. This doesn't excuse the Yakuza's criminal behavior, but it does expose that they are a much more complicated bunch than the typical gang.
Seeing the police's hesitation to act against the Uyoku Dantai, many Yakuza gangs started disguising their local offices as Uyoku Dantai. When this first started, there was no direct link between organized crime and the Akitian ultra-far-right. But this provided the basis for such links to form in the future. There were several movements over Akitian history to try and unify these fringe far-right groups under a single banner, and while every attempt was ultimately unsuccessful for a variety of reasons, there were many small successes born out of these attempts. For better or for worse, though, this also resulted in the Yakuza and Akitian far-right becoming more and more interwoven. Eventually, the links were solidified. The reason was simple, these links often proved mutually beneficial - Uyoku Dantai gained a source of funding for their operations, while Yakuza gained a front that would provide them with some protection from police activities.
This explains the links between the Yakuza and the Akitian far-right, but how does this translated into the formation of the Chiankei?
To answer that we must look a little farther. Back when the Motherland Restoration Party was in it's first phase of major activity, many in the Akitian far-right sought to distance themselves from the terrorist group. But while this could be easily done when the group was active, it starting getting difficult when the group went dormant. The Motherland Restoration Party often disguised it's local branches as simple Uyoku Dantai in it's dormant phase. Because it lay dormant it proved difficult for the police to track these groups down, though there were several prominent busts of such groups that made the news (which is how we know of this happening). However, the group lay dormant, not conducting any terrorist attacks and simply growing it's underground connections. Since they disguised themselves as Uyoku Dantai, it became inevitable that the Motherland Restoration Party would come into contact with the Yakuza gangs.
It is known that the Motherland Restoration Party had links to Akitian Yakuza gangs, but just how far those links went was never clear to the police or the public. It was known that the links had to have grown strong, as otherwise the Motherland Restoration Party simply wouldn't have had the resources to resume activities in the way that they eventually did. But those links proved to be far stronger than anyone had guessed - as when time came for the Restoration Party (speculated to be a renamed Motherland Restoration Party) to do their coup d'etat, many Yakuza gangs threw their support behind the coup. This combined with support from a small but determined segment of the military and police force gave them a huge edge.
While it is known that a number of Yakuza gangs pledged support for the coup because the gang leaders were members of the Restoration Party, it is probably that most Yakuza gangs weren't this. It is more likely, then, that the coup plotters offered the Yakuza gang leaders through their links something that they couldn't refuse - like, for example, a spot in what would become Akitsu's new secret police force.
Going this route definitely presented a huge problem for the fascist government - after all reorganizing criminal syndicates as a national secret police is no easy task. One must not only ensure that all follow orders, but also ensure that their loyalty to the new government is absolute. The new fascist government seems to have taken an interesting tactic towards achieving this though - slow, gradual change to the crime syndicates that joined them. Activity within Akitsu from Yakuza gangs shot up in the days immediately following the coup, no doubt because of the emboldened nature of the gangs. However, that activity has now slid down to pre-coup levels, and is slowly declining even further. This doesn't mean the Yakuza gangs are stopping their criminal activities - it most likely means that they have found other, far more lucrative activities, activities that require absolute secrecy.
If the government has been clamping down on brazen criminal activities, but allowing criminal activities that advance the governments line, while slowly and steadily molding the Yakuza gangs into full puppets and eventually integrated parts of the secret police, this would explain a decline in their activities. It would also explain how such a vast and extensive network of authoritarian rule was established in such a short period of time.
One might question how the lower levels of the crime syndicates would follow such a new government so readily - but in questioning it one shows a lack of understanding of the oyabun- kobun relationship that governs Yakuza structure. Recruits to the Yakuza gangs are expected to show absolute loyalty to their boss, usually headed by a single family. This goes to the point where new recruits often cut off all previous family connections - for the Yakuza becomes their new family when they join. This is even exemplified by the way they refer to each other, with lower ranking members referring to higher ranking members as "aniki" (兄貴) meaning "elder brother" and the boss as "oyaji" (おやじ) or "oyassan" (おやっさん) meaning "father" (though the formal title is "kumichō" written 組長). Likewise, the Yakuza boss and higher ranking members refer to lower ranking members as their "children". The bosses wife and other high-ranking women are often referred to by people other than the boss as "anesan" (姉さん) meaning "elder sister", though women in the Yakuza are fairly rare let alone women in higher ranks.
With such a tightly knit group, one would only need to gain the full support of the Yakuza's bosses to get them to help your cause. The average person would find it difficult, but if you plan a coup and have the support of part of the military suddenly and offer to be part of the secret police might seem a lot more appealing. And if you take control of key buildings in the capital city and successfully fight off some attempts by the rest of the military to retake those buildings, well then your offers will be taken seriously.
Ultimately this was how Akitsu's new secret police was established - by exploiting the many deep connections between the Akitian far-right and the Yakuza gangs. In doing so the government was able to establish a well-funded secret police force that has connections in every corner of Akitsu, and maybe even abroad. Such a police force is definitely not perfect - in fact, the government is likely to be trying to work out every problem that arises from this for many many years to come. However, if the short-term goal is to make a force to instill fear in the population to keep them in check - mission accomplished.

Two weeks after first airing, the anime titled "The Salesman" achieved record viewership numbers in Akitsu. It nearly topped the television charts, with many networks clamoring to find something to compete. All seemed to be going well for the show. That was, until today, when the show was unexpectedly and without explanation canceled by the network airing it, Kobara Broadcasting System (KBS).
The show itself takes a dark, more mature tone, which is unusual not only for an anime intended for children but also for the original creator of the show, Tezuka Fujio. Each episode follows a mysterious salesman, who has made it his job to "fill the gaps in people's hearts", as he interacts with various people who become his "customers". However, these people end up relying on the salesman or trying to cheat him, at which point he punishes them, usually ruining their lives in the process. The show has been praised for teaching children important life lessons, albeit in a rather creepy manner.
So why was the anime suddenly canceled?
The second episode of the anime, which aired just this past week, featured a politician in trouble. The Salesman offers the politician his services for a month to help advance his career. The politician then climbed the ladder of politics rapidly, eventually becoming next in line for the position of Prime Minister. However, realizing that elections are still far off and that he only achieved this because of the Salesman's help, he tries to get the Salesman to sign a contract saying he'll serve the politician for the rest of time. The Salesman punishes the politician, revealing his darkest secrets to the world, something that ruins his political career and his personal life.
This politician was a clear nod to the current Sōtō Hayato Yamaguchi. Not only is the character design similar but even his name and the way he acts in public as a politician is similar. This was obviously quite the unflattering depiction of him, and the Restoration Party obviously didn't take kindly to it. The show was canceled shortly after this episode aired. Shortly after that, Tezuka Fujio announced on Akitian social media that he was leaving the country to hide abroad "until things settle down", though such posts were quickly removed by government censors.
Where Tezuka Fujio has escaped to is unknown and nobody seems to be able to contact him or his family, but many Akitians hope that he is doing okay.

Aodhán Gobnet McLucais was assaulted by his uncle Raghnall Gobnet McLucais on Shrine grounds today, in a move that has outraged the priests and priestesses of the Reido Shrine. The move prompted a press announcement from the head priest Kevan Fionnán Neil shortly afterwards, in which he expressed his outrage at the attack and further commented on the religious situation in Strathae.
"This blatant attack on sacred land is a disgrace to Strathaens of all faiths," he said "there is no legitimate reason that this should have happened. It's a blatant attack on another faith and hast no place in a truly tolerant society."
In Reido, Shrines are considered sacred grounds and violence is especially forbidden on them. They are typically built on kōmyakusuji, and are believed to provide a place for a land's "Nushi" (especially powerful Rei that act as guardians of the Rei in a certain geographic area) to interact with humanity. Committing violent acts on a Shrine is believed to introduce impurity, or kegare, to that land that must be cleansed through a special ceremony. In Akitsu, violence on Shrine grounds has long been avoided (though it has sometimes happened in spite of this), even in the long era's of war.
Aodhán Gobnet McLucais was granted refuge in Strathae Kotohira Jingū, the largest Reido Shrine in Strathae, after he was shunned by his family for converting to Reido from traditional Strathaen religion. This came amid the rise of a right-wing movement in Strathae that actively promoted traditional Strathaen values, taking actions that critics have decry discriminatory against certain minorities while supporters claim is necessary to protect the country's tolerance.
Kevan Fionnán Neil said that Strathae had a long way to go before becoming a truly tolerant society.
"When people are willing to go out and commit acts of violence on sacred grounds, there is not truly tolerance." he said "This is becoming a serious problem. Something must be done!"
Kevan Fionnán Neil said that the Shrine would continue to offer refuge to Aodhán Gobnet McLucais after the attack. They also confirmed that they will offer refuge to anyone else in need of it, including Strathae's religious minorities that they say has increasingly come under fire.
"Reido Shrines are, have been, and will always be a place of refuge for those who seek it." said Kevan "Differences in thought do not validate this discrimination. As long as someone is willing to accept that people may disagree with them on certain issues, we do what we can to help them."

Kamo no Ikurō, one of the five Reishu at Kobara no Miya, has died at the Kobara Medical University Hospital this morning of natural causes. He was 95 at the time.
Born in Kitaka to a shrine family, Kamo no Ikurō made a name in his city for his charitable donations to countless causes. He was known for his dedication to the Reiki, often using it as a guide for his life. Perhaps it is unsurprising that is a known conservative in terms of religious doctrine, but though he is known to stand firm to the religious texts he is often known to be open-minded to other viewpoints. He may not necessarily agree with these views, but there are many instances of him listening to someone whom he disagrees with and responding calmly.
Kamo no Ikurō was well respected for his work. While working at his family shrine, he was known for giving refuge to many of those who sought it. This extended to ethnic minorities and even refugees from authoritarian regimes. Though it is rare to find such people at his family's shrine, that is because eventually he started referring people to shelters in the city after it became too much for the shrine to handle. In the days right before he became a Reishu, he allowed the most needy to stay at the shrine.
After becoming a Reishu, Kamo no Ikurō was known to often cite the Reiki along with the research of Reishi in his vote on whatever religious matter was being discussed by the Reishu. Known as a conservative, he frequently disagreed with more liberal Reishu. But he was also known for his collected demeanor, and is known to have maintained close relationships with even the most liberal of Reishu in spite of their disagreements.
"In spire of our disagreements, he was a dear friend." said Abe no Minoru, known to be one of the most liberal of the Reishu. "He will be missed by all. I pray that his soul can gracefully return to the Kōki."
This leave an open seat among the top ranks of Kobara no Miya. The Reishu are expected to meet later this week to discuss possible successors to Kamo no Ikurō.

After 6 months of deliberation among the 9 remaining Reishu, Kevan Fionnán Neil has been elected to replace the vacant seat left open by the death of Kamo no Ikuro. Should Kevan accept this, it would mark the first time in history that a non-Ostaran has been elected to the highest possible office in Reido, and the first time that someone who is not Akitian or Sainamese has been elected to the position.
Kevan Fionnán Neil is not well known within Akitsu, but is known abroad for acting on what he believed is right and taking action against intolerance within Strathae. Within his own country he is liked by many followers of Reido, but there are as many people who dislike him as there are people who like him.
His most noted actions include opening up the Reido Shrine to Akhadists who fear persecution, along with those who are victims of the practice of shunning, something done in some branches of Strathae's native religion of Brezhigism. He often spoke out about specific issues, but as was tradition declined to endorse any political organization. He has been a subject of criticism because he gives refuge to people whom even he says are intolerant. Kevan has explained this by stating "We give refuge to those who need it, regardless of their beliefs. As long as they are willing to accept that not everyone shares their views, then I see no issue in helping someone who needs help."
Should he accept, Kevan Fionnán Neil would be the first non-Ostaran to ever be elected to the highest possible office in Reido. He would also be the first person who is not Akitian or Sainamese to take the position.
It is important to note that just because he was elected to the position, that doesn't mean that Kevan will become the next Reishu. Kevan retains the right to decline the position, should he choose to. When asked about this, Kevan only stated that he would make a decision within a week, and declined to comment any further.

A small number of Carpathians in Eskkya have taken refuge in Strathae Kotohira Jingu, which has been known to be home to many Akhadists and others from Strathae and later Eskkya who have fled their homes out of fear of persecution. This comes as several Carpathians have been murdered in the country, with tensions running high due to this incident. The Carpathians that have fled declined to speak to the media and have asked Mainichi Shinpo and other media organizations to keep them anonymous, for fear of retribution to their family and possibly their Eskkyan friends at the hands of nationalist extremists.
The shrine in recent times has been a place of refuge for many. The shrine became home to a few Akhadists that fled persecution fin Strathae, and most famously Aodhán Gobnet McLucais, who has been living at the shrine since being shunned by his peers for converting to Reido. Reports indicate that Aodhán has been living at the shrine since, having adopted a religious life.
The response to this from those in Eskkya and the Carpathian government is currently not known. However, Priests and Priestesses at the shrine have maintained that the shrine will always be a place of refuge for those that seek it.
