Hunting and Killing of animals for meat made illegal
Today a bill passed by Liga Breizhighist and Alianza Democrática in parliament to ban killing of animals not on the pest list without a pest control license or for purposes of food was passed. The animal rights act was updated to give them the right to life unless culling was needed for pest control, putting down for humane reasons, killing for pet food or disease control. Animals were declared to be equal to humans in the bill with killing or abusing an animal to carry the equal sentence to if it was done to a human. This would mean that killing an animal illegally and intentionally would be classified as murder and given the mandatory life sentence as such with charges for animal cruelty also to face tougher punishment. Road kill would not be prosecutable as it is often unavoidable though the bill also mandated that authorities have to provide an animal crossing in rural areas for every 3 pedestrian crossings or bridges for cars and every road must be assessed to see if it has enough crossings during the planning stage. The same would apply to all transport infrastructure.
The new act also strengthens protections of animals giving them the right to personal space with increased space requirements banning any non-free range farming within the country. The act has been championed by animal rights group Amigos De Los Animales as a crucial law in protecting animal rights. The group said "animals have feelings, emotions and families like us humans and also have intelligence. They feel pain the same way and are part of nature just like us. We must respect their rights as parts of the natural world by not killing unecessarily." The act also bans any fishing in UBD waters declaring the whole waters of UBD a fishing free zone with only licensed pest control hunters and rangers allowed to kill and only for a good reason such as disease control or for environmental balance but even these must seek natural methods first like biological pest control. critics say the bill will cost the state too much money and is an extreme response. The bill also means that all meat will now have to be imported. The few places that sell meat products have warned it will increase costs and potentially drive them out of business though supporters of the bill suggest they shouldn't exist in the first place.
