Eh, I could recommend one that we all use, if you want, since you're right. I personally find Ovo's Rustic Redemption to be my favorite, I've used it since 1.6 and will probably be building/designing with it in mind. I just like that it adds a great deal of very clean, HD detail while still being mostly true to the original aesthetic, without too much of the ugly muddling of textures many other HD textures have when viewed at longer distances (You can still tell what is what). While there's clear differences on some blocks, it's also similar enough in general aesthetic to the original base textures that designing with certain materials will still carry across to someone with only the base resources.
But that's enough of me waxing nostalgic. Honestly, I'm open to suggestions for other packs. Ideally, it would be nice to have a spread of different "recommended" resources to choose from and test for cross-texture design compatibility, so people can choose what one they like best and still have your designs carry through to them...instead of, you know, forcing everyone to use one resource pack that they don't necessarily like too much.
