ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 80 Years 2 VINTYR, 1578 Election Fallout: Senate makeup more diverse after strong showings from Orthodox Conservatives, Democrats Upstart parties gain power as long dominant Republicans and Conservatives weaken CATHEDRIUM - The 1578 Senate elections showed that there is much yearning for new blood amidst generations of Republican and Conservative political dominance. Though the Republican Party still managed to win the most seats in the Senate, they lost strength after three straight Senate elections of gaining seats. The final table showed Republicans on 27 seats, Conservatives on 13, Democrats on 13, Orthodox Conservatives on 11, Federalists on 5, Imperialists on 4, Independents on 3 and Communists on 1. The Republicans, Conservatives, Federalists and Independents all lost seats in this election. Republicans lost 4, Conservatives dropped a whopping 12, Federalists lost 6 and Independents lost 2. The biggest losers on the night were undoubtedly the Conservative Party. Losing twelve seats - many of them to the Orthodox Conservatives - has greatly sapped their power and has cast doubt on the party's role as the chief opposition to the ruling Republicans. Despite this, the Conservatives still maintain a powerful organizational structure that outdoes many of the other parties and this structure led to a Imperial campaign victory in the referendum vote. So if there is a silver lining in the dark clouds of this election, it's the referendum victory. Another big loser was the Federalist Party who also took a big hit after two straight cycles of improving numbers with many of their losses coming at the hands of the upstart Democrats not to mention the loss in the referendum, which the Federalists took more hard than the Republicans had. Losing two seats in the traditional Federalist heartland of Xiansai to the Democrats served as a warning to the Federalists that things have gone south fast. It's hard to say whether or not the failure in this election may spell the doom of the Federalist Party, but for what's it worth the party still has some fight left. Speaking of, the Democratic Party was the clear winner of the Senate election, taking 13 seats in their electoral debut. Despite the Democrats campaigning as the party of the center, they only managed to pick off their seats from Republicans and Federalists. This result in a way hurt the Democrats' pitch in the short term as a centrist party because of their lack of pickups from Conservatives or Orthodox Conservatives, but in the long run it may payoff as their broad appeals look to extend far beyond the left and center-left. Another big winner, though the numbers may not show that, was the Communist Party. For decades, Communism was labeled a "twin evil" with Fascism. This year, that stigma was challenged after a Communist managed to get elected in the Skovos province of Sorcae. If this is an indication of what may yet come, then we may only be hearing the first faint rumblings of Communism seeping into the Angirisian political atmosphere. Even though the election ended in a hung Senate, the Republican Party still emerged as the largest party and one in very good shape to form a governing coalition. They would truthfully only need the 13 new Democrats elected this year to push a coalition to 40 and that's not including traditional allies in the Federalist Party nor if any Independents decide to enter a coalition. RE: Angirisian News Agencies - Aerandariel - 09-13-2016 ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 81 Years 13 DOSA, 1579 Senate opens with no coalition Furious Republicans took to the floor blasting Democrats, Federalists for "failing to compromise" THE CAPITOL - The Imperial Senate opened its new session today without a majority coalition running it for the first time in the body's history, as Republican senators took to the floor attacking Democratic and Federalist senators for failing to come to a compromise to organize the Senate. This comes after a last-second appeal by Chancellor Aerandariel Apotecarius to the Democratic and Federalist caucuses to "provide a solid and stable Senate to sufficiently govern the Empire". However, both the Democratic and Federalist caucuses have fired back. Federalists, fed up with a Republican Party who've stolen a number of their seats in the last several elections, argued that Republicans have been acting in bad faith despite numerous coalition agreements and memorandums of understanding. The Federalists also pointed out that they were upset over the fact that Republicans had promised before to allow Federalists some chairmanships of Senate committees but failed to produce. The Democrats outright attacked the Republicans, saying that in their coalition talks, the Republicans wanted to make the Democrats nothing more than a "junior partner who would back Republican bills no matter what the reservations". Democrats accused the Republicans of being "very unfair and very inconsiderate" towards Democrats who were entering the Senate. This matter has exploded into controversy, as now with no governing coalition in place it is possible that for the first time in history the Senate could be dissolved by the Throne, as Emperor Tyrael does have the power to issue a decree ordering the Senate dissolved in the case of either a hung Senate or in the absence of a governing coalition, which the latter is presently the case. However, Chancellor Apotecarius has said that the dissolution of the Senate would "cause far too much drama and put the future of this government in incredible jeopardy. I caution the Emperor not to take such a drastic step". The Emperor has not commented on the issue, but aides say the idea of dissolving the Senate has been floated as early as two days ago when it became clear a coalition was impossible. RE: Angirisian News Agencies - Aerandariel - 09-14-2016 ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 81 Years 27 DOSA, 1579 Chancellor Apotecarius speaks about Akitsu, Svarna coups The Chancellor spoke at length about Akitsu and Svarna Surya and the future of relations ANDARIELUM, Angleterre - In a speech before the Angleterre State Chamber of Commerce today, Chancellor Aerandariel Apotecarius blasted the so-called "government of Akitsu" by calling it "illegitimate" and "outright obnoxious to think the rest of the world is a bunch of blasted fools". Mr. Apotecarius particularly ripped the new Akitsian premier Hayato Yamaguchi with a rather terse statement, saying, "Mr. Yamaguchi must take the rest of the world to be fools if he thinks his so-called 'elections' and new 'constitution' will earn him anything but indignation. He is a sham. He does not represent the Akitsian people, who are right now living in fear of this rat fink and his hoodlums." It was the strongest statement yet made by an Angirisian official on the subject of the Akitsu coup, which has drawn very widespread criticism from around the world ranging from calls of illegitimacy to potential sanctions. But Akitsu wasn't the only target of the Chancellor's barbs. Svarna Surya too, long an adversary of the Angirisian Empire in Ostara, has also been back in the news with a coup of their own but this time it would appear on the surface that the situation there is different than what it was in Akitsu considering that conditions there are slightly improved. Despite this, the Chancellor took the coup leaders there to task saying, "Under no circumstances is it okay for anyone, military or no, to usurp a standing government that was chosen. Svarna Surya had begun to make strides towards a better future for its people including more freedom and better economic policies but this coup shrouds that in mystery and potential disaster. Shame on them." It was very strange to see Mr. Apotecarius act so aggressively in this speech today, considering his more passive approach to foreign policy. But the recent actions in a once-major ally have set off a firestorm in Angirisian government offices that now "military intervention" is being floated more and more. Analysts say that the usurper government is likely to begin restricting political freedoms and possibly be more restrictive economically, which will fan the flames even more against them as they try to establish some measure of legitimacy in the eyes of the world. However, only a few right-wing states in the world - namely Oslanburg and Nerysia - have recognized the new government, which has emboldened the usurpers further. RE: Angirisian News Agencies - Aerandariel - 09-19-2016 ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 81 Years 5 QUARTYR, 1579 In midst of session, Republicans build tenuous Senate coalition Leading Republicans acquiesce to Democratic requests, bring aboard two Independents THE CAPITOL - The Republican Caucus announced today that they have reached a tentative coalition agreement with the Democratic Caucus as well as two Independent members of the Senate, giving the combined caucus a total of 42 of the 79 seats, two more than required for a majority. The Republican Party suffered serious political damage within the Senate in the days following the start of the Senate session, after Federalists and Democrats walked out of coalition talks with Republicans and the two parties subsequently called out Republican lawmakers on what some Federalists termed as "a slap in the face of our good kindness for a just and capable government". In this second round of coalition talks, the Federalists flatly refused to negotiate with the Republicans, saying that their partnership with the largest party in the Senate was effectively over. The Democrats were clearly apprehensive but did agree to the sit-down, while two of the three Senate Independents also joined in the talks. The only Independent not involved, Darius Sorex of Bramwell, declined to be engaged in talks since he was elected Senate Floor Leader. The agreement, which came out to be a memorandum of understanding, was signed by Republican, Democratic and Independent members before the start of Senate business today. The agreement quelled any talk of dissolving the Senate by the Emperor and calmed down general fears of a weakened government so soon after an Imperial victory in the 1578 referendum and it placed confidence back in the government. But, it is very likely that the holdout has done considerable damage to the Republican brand and may have sent some of their supporters into other parties, namely the Democratic or Federalist parties as well as given fuel to the fire of opposition Conservatives and Orthodox Conservatives who claim Republicans cannot run a smooth government operation and warn of considerable risk to the Imperial system as a whole. RE: Angirisian News Agencies - Aerandariel - 02-14-2017 ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 84 Years 14 QUARTYR, 1582 New Galasian Civil War: Refugees continue to flood southern Angiris Aranoch and Ohiae are front-lines in a major refugee crisis emanating from New Galasian conflict LUT GHOLEIN, Aranoch - An estimated 275,000 people have fled across the Angirisian-New Galasian border since a civil war erupted in the Kingdom of New Galasia three years ago, says a refugee advocacy group operating in Lut Gholein. The border states of Aranoch and Ohiae have been the focal point of virtually all refugee traffic heading north. A month after the war began, Imperial officials swarmed southern Aranoch and Ohiae with volunteers and aid workers hoping to assess the situation and to provide aid to as many people as possible. The cities of Daytium and Cincinium in southern Ohiae have been most refugees have been sent to, as government officials scrambled to open shelters in those cities. Southern Aranoch is littered with refugee camps, since there are very few major cities to take many of the refugees to and some of them have been deemed unable to survive a trip north to Lut Gholein. The New Galasian civil war has put a major strain on Imperial resources, but for the time being the Angirisian Empire seems to be holding up under the pressure. But many sources are saying that if the war goes on too much longer, then Angiris may not be able to withstand too many more refugees. If that is the case, then it is very possible that the Angirisian Empire would institute a border lock-down to stop the refugee flow. Barring that, there may be no other choice for the Empire but to intervene either politically and/or militarily to stop the civil war and restore peace to the northern Near East. RE: Angirisian News Agencies - Aerandariel - 03-01-2017 ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 84 Years 21 OCHTYR, 1582 PRAYERS ANSWERED Angirisian Empire's national football team finally captures their first World Cup Championship after a historic final CATHEDRIUM - It finally happened. The moment Angirisian football fans have waited decades for. The moment that Angiris as a country has waited for for generations. A moment that was geared for since 1566. A moment that finally seemed real after Jurgen Baumann came on the scene. That moment has come at last. Today, after a historic World Cup Final match with Severyane that for a while didn't seem to want to end and after so many twists and turns that put Angirisian hopes in doubt and gave Severyanians a case of the willies, the Angirisian national football team finally hoisted the SIFA World Cup Championship trophy high in the air to the glee of almost 100,000 Angirisian faithful inside the Arena at the Capitol Complex and millions across the country and around the world. The way to the Final was not easy. The Angirisian team, despite cruising to two straight group stage victories over Ceribia and Magentina, ran into a brick wall thanks an embattled Akitsu side that had to wonder what could happen back home if they lost. Despite the loss to Akitsu, Angiris was poised to make a deep run. It started with a battle against Nyland that was almost too much for Angirisian manager - and former Nylander manager - Jurgen Baumann. Perhaps it was too easy considering Baumann knew Nyland's strategies inside and out and it showed with a 2-1 victory over a side that was in the World Cup Final four years prior in a loss to Angirisian rivals Kyrzbekistan. That test became overshadowed by an even bigger test: Lanlania in the quarterfinals. An important match to win if not for the fact it meant a berth in the semi-finals, it was a chance to exact a bit of revenge on the squad who put the final nail in the coffin on Angiris's disaster-striven 1566 World Cup campaign. A shutout over the Lanlanians helped quench that thirst. Next came the surging A'sir side, who had made some fair noise in recent years. This semi-final match was Angiris's roughest match yet, as it went to extra time. That win punched the most important ticket to the most important match in Angirisian history. The final match with Severyane was one that was topsy-turvy all day long. Severyane led most of the way in regulation time, but with two minutes to go the Angirisian side replied after an earlier miss and a goal that was then redacted due to an offsides penalty. That brought the score even and threw things into extra time for the ninth time in World Cup history. Severyane looked very strong in extra time, scoring two straight goals in the matter of a few minutes. Those goals silenced the massive crowd in the Arena at the Capitol Complex and put Angirisian hopes of victory on life support. But those hopes were suddenly given new life again after the Angirisians pulled out two quick goals to make things even again and send the match into penalty kicks. What transpired became historic. Nineteen penalty kicks between the countries resulted, leading both sides deep into their rosters to break the deadlock. It came down to the respective goalkeepers. Severyane's Belinsky missed just off the outside, keeping things at 9-9. Angiris's Steven Dorsey came next, with the hopes of 70 million on his shoulders. The kick that followed will forever be ingrained in Angirisian football memory. It was the kick that finally brought about the moment. The second it happened, the Arena exploded into jubilation. The Imperial City exploded into jubilation, as did Westmarch City. As did Caldeum, still reeling from the Nerysian riots. As did Lut Gholein, and Tristram, Aiur, and so many more cities where crowds of thousands and perhaps tens of thousands gathered. Even the natives of Mount Arreat were moved to celebration. It was an amazing moment. Instead of riots several days prior in misery, streets were filled with thousands of people jumping up and down, screaming and hollering at the top of their lungs, tears running down many of their faces. It was a moment that in many respects validated the work of generations of Angirisian leaders hoping to bring the Empire away from a past filled with death, destruction and disaster. Some may say it sounds over-dramatic but so many Emperors, Chief Ministers, Advisory Council members, Senators and later Chancellors did all they could to repair the wounds left in the nation after civil wars, political unrest, and instability in government. To make a story short, the Angirisian Empire nearly collapsed numerous times. That was a time many people want to forget. This World Cup victory today, even though it was a sporting event, finally united the Empire in ways politics and government could not. At first glance, it may seem Angiris's path to a World Cup title seemed all too easy. The big powerhouses - Nerysia, Oslanburg, Kyrzbekistan - all fell in the round of 16 or quarterfinals in matches they should have easily taken. It can be said that if Angiris came up against any one of those three teams, it would never have made it to the final. For that matter, nobody gave Angiris really all that much of a shot to go very deep in this tournament. Everyone - the experts, people on the street and otherwise - was proven completely wrong. And for many Angirisians, that is an amazing feeling. RE: Angirisian News Agencies - Aerandariel - 03-02-2017 ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 84 Years 2 NUEVA, 1582 Democrats Rising Democratic Party rising to be viable third option in Imperial politics as Republicans, Conservatives begin to fall in the eyes of the public AIUR, Aiuria - If we told you two years ago that the Democratic Party would be leading most national polls for the 1582 Senate campaign, you'd probably check us into the loony bin. But two years later, after two strong national results in 1578 and 1580 that led to double-digit numbers of Senate seats and an increase in Democratic members of the Advisory Council both in deputy positions and in ranking positions, the chance - albeit slim with as many parties that are contending - that the Democrats could end up as the largest party in the Senate or perhaps even figure out a way to bust out a majority (which nobody's been able to do for a decade now). So how is it that the Democrats are pulling this off? A couple of factors it seems are contributing to the strengthening of the Democratic Party as well as others. First, many voters are getting tired of the Republican and Conservative parties dominating the Imperial political landscape. The favorability ratings of both parties are getting low - 32% for the Republicans, 28% for the Conservatives - and there has been a very large group of voters (64%) who want either another party to challenge the top two parties or simply want a change in the guard. Second, Democratic leaders have targeted more centrist-minded voters in an effort to bridge party gaps. Many of these voters are disenchanted Republicans and Conservatives and voters that cannot bring themselves to vote for any of the more ideologically-fringe parties like the Federalists and Orthodox Conservatives. These, combined with an expanded percentage of the electorate who identify themselves as politically Independent, and you have what sound like a natural constituency for the Democratic Party to seize the moment and get a share of power. It is very unlikely that based on the current outlook of the balance of power in the Senate that any party - the Democrats included - will attain the 40-seat majority needed to control the Senate. So the race will come down to which party could win the most seats. The Republicans have made it five straight elections with the most seats, and the Conservatives are usually hovering in second. In both 1578 and 1580, the Republicans and Conservatives held more than half of the Senate seats, with the Democrats and Orthodox Conservatives usually in third and fourth. This time around though, the deep unpopularity of the Republicans and Conservatives are leading to a strong possibility that the Democrats and possibly the Orthodox Conservatives could end up as the strongest two parties. Democrats are hovering around 23% to 25% in many polls in first place. Orthodox Conservatives lag behind, but are tied for third with the Conservatives in the low teens. There is still time for things to change, but by the end of election night in Tolven, we might be saying "Democrats are the largest Senate party". After that, then what? RE: Angirisian News Agencies - Aerandariel - 03-16-2017 ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 84 Years 6 TOLVEN, 1582 DECISION '82: Democrats come off big winners Democrats lead the field with 20 seats, with Republicans and Orthodox Conservatives tied for second with 19 each CATHEDRIUM - Despite all six major parties failing to reach the magic 40 seats needed for a majority in the Senate, the balance of power has still shifted dramatically from the fringes to a more centrist point of view. In the aftermath of Election Day, the Democratic Party stands atop the leaderboard with 20 seats, eight better than their still impressive showing two years ago. The Orthodox Conservative Party surged to a very strong second-place tie with the Republican Party, each getting 19 seats. For the Orthodox Conservatives it was a good night, adding five seats to their totals from two years ago while the once-dominant Republicans - possessors of 29 seats two years ago - dropped a whopping 10 seats in an apparent rejection of their manifesto. The Conservative Party fell to fourth place with 15 seats, but still managed to be on the plus side by gaining one seat. The Federalist Party came in fifth after dropping two seats, falling to 3 on the night (all 3 in Xiansai). The Communist Party, still struggling to gain traction across the board, was the only party not to gain or lose a seat after holding on to their one chair in Sorcae. Independent candidates for the second straight election did not win a single seat. The clear winners of this night are the Democrats and Orthodox Conservatives, who now each possess their own mandate. The Democrats, after leading in the polls for months, cashed in on their success and came up with the most seats but only by a slim margin. The Orthodox Conservatives made good on their promise to be a "stronger opposition party" than the mainstream Conservatives and took some seats away from their parent party to tie for second. The Conservatives gained a seat from the Republicans, but they still failed to retain their status as the main opposition party to the government and now seem to have to settle for second billing on the opposition side. But it is clear that the ruling Republicans took the worst beating of the night. Dropping ten seats - many of them to Democrats - has done two things: 1) it signaled a rejection of the ruling party's agenda and also a rejection of the idea of two dominant parties over three or four weaker ones and 2) the loss of so many seats puts Chancellor Aerandariel Apotecarius's agenda in some measure of jeopardy. What comes of this will be yet another coalition in the Senate, but this time the path to a coalition is all too clear: the Democrats - with 20 seats - have to come to an agreement with either the Republicans (the likelier of the two) or the Orthodox Conservatives (the unlikelier of the two) who each possess 19 seats. That puts them 1 away from a majority, which then presents two options. The first one would to be bring aboard the three remaining Federalists, which would put the coalition over the top with 42 seats. But if that didn't work, then the second option would be to try to bring aboard the lone Communist in the Senate. Doing that gets the coalition right to 40 seats and enough for a majority. Either way, the possible coalition would still be a bit leftist, which could turn off some Democrats and like-minded Republicans. What could be possible is that a coalition develops that leaves out the Democrats entirely, though that would be difficult to manage. One scenario has the 19 Republicans getting together with the 15 Conservatives to cobble together 34 seats, then add on the 3 Federalists for 37 seats, the lone Communist to push it to 38, and then two or three turncoat Orthodox Conservatives to push the coalition over the top. Another scenario has the Orthodox Conservatives, Conservatives (who again make up 34 seats), Federalists (bumping numbers up to 37), and three turncoat Republicans to get them over the top. The greatest consequence of this election however remains that the administration of Chancellor Aerandariel Apotecarius now potentially faces a hostile Senate, especially on issues where Democrats may be more to the right of a seemingly left-leaning Chancellor. It is important to keep in mind that the Chancellor didn't start off as a left-leaning Republican; he was much more along the lines of Democratic thinking when he first assumed office. As time passed though, Mr Apotecarius moved to the left slightly and began towing the Republican line. That apparently backfired on him, as the election results clearly showed. One thing is certain, the Democrats will likely exert pressure on Mr Apotecarius to install more Democrats into the Imperial administration and alter his agenda in the hopes of as few fights as possible. RE: Angirisian News Agencies - Aerandariel - 04-27-2017 ANGIRISIAN NEWS NETWORK The Angirisian Empire's #1 Source for News and Commentary for 85 Years 7 ELVA, 1583 NEW GALASIAN CIVIL WAR: Angiris now on verge of military action Humanitarian crisis has pushed the Empire to its limit, and now it is considering a variety of military options CATHEDRIUM - News broke earlier today that Angirisian Foreign Office officials, including Foreign Minister Christophos Caesarius, have been sending messages and communications to the governments of Ceribia, Pythos, Mestra, Kyrzbekistan, A'Sir, Ga'Bath, Zargistan, Mithraina, and others informing them of "the very likely possibility of military engagement to end the civil war in the Kingdom of New Galasia." This decision was apparently reached several weeks ago, sources say, but that the Angirisian government were going over multiple battlefield scenarios that could play out with Imperial Legion forces being committed to the conflict. Angirisian officials apparently became even more resolute in their decision after a sham election in Alsace was panned and criticized across the world, as well as some international pressure on Cathedrium to act quickly before the war became an even bigger problem. Angirisian officials cited a number of reasons why the Empire was planning to move in militarily to end the New Galasian conflict. First among their reasons was the humanitarian crisis that has resulted from the war. It is now estimated that the number of New Galasian refugees probably now tops 1.5 million and continuing to increase, and it is pushing the Empire's humanitarian efforts to their very limits. Many refugees crossing into Angiris have now been sent to other countries such as Nyland, Mestra and others to help ease the pressure on Angirisian infrastructure. Much of the Empire's foreign aid budget had been diverted to help with the overwhelming financial burden the crisis has caused Angiris. The second reason given was the apparent lack of attention the war and the resultant humanitarian crisis had been getting from the rest of the world. Many of the copies of the messages obtained by news agencies note a tone of distress and dismay at other world powers, and more than once was the conflicts in Tambossa and Caladria as well as the quick responses to those crises raised by Angirisian officials. An excerpt read, "The lack of attention given by the international community about the war in New Galasia and the subsequent refugee crisis is a stark contrast to the wars in Tambossa and Caladria, which were treated with top priority status. This failure by the international community has only worsened the crisis, and the Angirisian Empire and more importantly the innocent people of New Galasia have been left to suffer." The third and final reason was simply the loss of patience by the Imperial government for the war to end or for a chance at diplomacy to take hold. With all of these issues compounded, the Angirisian Empire felt that it had had enough and was deciding to take a military action. No details about how the conflict would be conducted or how Angirisian officials saw the end of the war shape out, but the messages did say that a broad outline of Angirisian goals would be laid out before the international community and that the real details of the engagement would be left for the world to witness. It is unclear how far the Empire is wanting to take this conflict. Clearly though, the Empire has had enough. A civil war raging on its southern border for several years with no end in sight and a humanitarian crisis to boot with no international action since has pushed Chancellor Aerandariel Apotecarius and his government to making this critical decision. It is certain that the conflict will not end quickly, and it is likely Angirisian forces will be involved for several years to come but it is hopeful that with the Empire's involvement, peace will finally take hold in New Galasia and that stability - or what can be made of it in a troubled Near East - can return. THE SENATE - BREAKING NEWS: The Imperial Senate has just finished voting on a declaration of war on the Kingdom of New Galasia, specifically targeting the Alsace coup government. The Senate vote was 62 for and 17 against, awaiting Chancellor Aerandariel Apotecarius's signature. Specifically omitted from the declaration was the separatist Rojadavi Republic, the rebelling monarchist forces and the Akhadist-controlled territories in Eastmarch. The Senate's declaration declared all three groups to be "non-aggressive combatants towards the Angirisian Empire at this time." This marks the official beginning of the long-awaited Angirisian intervention in the Galasian civil war, which has raged for four years, cost thousands of lives, and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes.
